You DEFINITELY need new brakes. Your brakes could go at any time. If you are going to keep your car, you need to get this done.
Iā€™m not sure how much they will charge you but hopefully you agreed to get them replaced with NEW parts.

I thought you had a quote for what the parts & labor would be.
And yes I can envision the labor being intensive. Working with corroded parts can lead to unexpected difficulty. Parts that under less corroded condition might be easily removed. Corrosion has a tendency to make it necessary to burn them off & look for a place to mount the new parts. That and more than likely those brake lines don't come prefabricated & have to be custom cut & fitted.
I've had some tricky repairs to do this is one job I'd hate to have to do. Working under the car reaching up to do the work needed isn't easy.

Donā€™t assume that someone is actually working on your car.

They may have placed some sort of rust busting solvent on parts waiting for it to work and help loosen connections, waiting for parts, a more experienced mechanic to have a look, etcā€¦

They should honor the quote unless one repair leads to another and then they should contact you for authorization.
 
I guess I drive an almost classic. I'm retired and obviously we are empty nesters. All the years of my career I commuted in company cars. Because we have a farm I bought a pickup truck for its many uses on the farm. Like many today my wife and I go to and from home in an SUV with its room, bells and whistles. I still have that pickup purchased in 2002 and it is still a nice low mileage vehicle. It's always been well maintained and frankly at my age I have no desire to have the latest sporty looking sedan. We like the SUV when we travel and like my truck.
 
Have my car back - in the shop for two and a half days - $2059.54 (Ā£1523.31, ā‚¬1758.25). The drive home was okay, but they feel spongier that they did before the repair when they were actually grabby. The car stops, I guess that's the important thing.

Spongy? I hope they bleed them correctly.
 
I was telling the service advisor that the car wasn't my only problem and that I had to have 4 service visits recently because my furnace stopped heating. She said I was the 4th person to mention that to her this week. I wonder if those people have the same heating company. If so, no wonder they are always busy.

If your brakes feel spongy, it could be due to several common issues:
