$100 Worth of Groceries Opinion

I've been finding that fresh fruit is too expensive and since most of it needs to be used within a few days it is prone to being wasted. Frozen fruit is expensive but there is no rush to eat it (less waste) so it is more economical.

A lot of food in that picture will go bad quickly I think.

So my $100 picture would look like a few bags of frozen vegetables, frozen fruit, couple frozen dinners, milk, eggs, cheese, healthy (no sugar) cereal, and cat food. Except I don't stop at $100 so there would also be olives and low-sugar ice cream :)

It all depends on what you buy. I could probably do the same at some of the boutique supermarkets in the area. There prices make Whole Foods look like a bargain. Overall, assuming the produce was not organic and in season, this seems a rather high price to pay for what is shown.

OTOH, the other day somebody broke into my neighbor’s car and stole $100 worth of groceries from the glove compartment.

How could that have possibly cost £100?.... unless that block of whatever at the front is some rare steak
These are just estimates by me.
That big box of Halloween candy would be C$15 to $20.
Fancy granola bars?
Maybe it’s organic meat.
One can of soup, regular price is $2+.
Large box of cereal is $5
Packaged vegetables & fruits are pricey. I just buy a few loose of each.

My purchase would look similar, except, no to the box of cereal, that big box of chips or 18 whatever, canned soup, Kind bars, and that fake meat in front.

I would have lots more vegs.
Surprising how quick it adds up these days.

I can't make out everything in the pic, but a few things I could match to packaging on Walmart's web site. Some of that stuff I don't buy so I used my local WM price, otherwise used prices where I shop. Rounded to the closest dollar not assuming organic.

18 pack assorted chips 10
Tomatoes 5
Bag of mini peppers 4
Hummus/ dip 4
broccoli 3
cauliflower 4
2 boxes chex 10
bananas 1
Kind bars 5-7
apples/ peaches? 2
blueberries 6
soup 2
pack of muffins 4
potatoes ? 4
pkg priced on top 5
meat/ faux meat 6-10
unidentified item
between chex and muffins...fruit? veg?--$?

est about 75-81

the most a similar bunch of groceries here would cost is £35-£40

I get a lot more groceries than that for less than half the price - including plenty of fresh produce. I don't buy meat or "kind" protein/granola bars (once or twice a year I buy Coscto's Nature Valley Chewy Fruit and Nut - 48 bars for $19). Don't purchase branded cereal, individual packs of chips, out of season or pre-cut produce, or hummus (make my own from dried garbanzos).

One of the easiest places to economize is in the grocery aisles. Any fool can overpay for anything. Seems the photo in the first post is living proof.

I spend more on food than I should or could. But this looks really weird. Two boxes of cereal. Some places are really charging a lot for cereal.

This looks like it was purchased at higher priced stores like Raley's of Safeway in my area. Not WINCO Foods or Grocery Outlet. Also if they are in a large city urban area, prices can be higher.

DH is diabetic and watches his diet pretty carefully, and what I noticed in that group there was not much protein.

I don't
No idea what groceries cost
Wife does all the grocery shopping

I do know inflation has made her stronger
She can now carry $100 worth of groceries in one arm
That's horrendous.... everything in the UK is expensive, and God alone knows the price of Food has risen sharply here in the last year or so.. but £100 of groceries in one arm?.. not here ... I spend roughly £80 per grocery shopping trip.. ..I don't buy cheap food..like luncheon meat or spam.. or any cheap pr-packaged food... and that £80 lasts at least 2 weeks... and will fill 3 Bags at least

but £100 of groceries in one arm?.. not here
I was being a bit facetious
She only spends $40 a week
Pantries and freezers are full
..and the garden fills the gaps
Canning/freezing
She does shop once a week for basics
Flour/sugar/oil/ seasonings

She makes her own mayo and sauces
bakes our bread

aaand.....bakes cookies!

Fresh produce isn't cheap. Some can be washed then frozen to extend its life a little. Most of us would do well to keep the balance of processed foods as low as in the photo.
