In my husband's new car, if there is anything at all on the back seat, he gets a "check the rear seat" alert when he shuts off the car. Even if it is something as light as his cane. It is sad we have come to the point we need to have our car remind us to look in the back seat before we get out. The only issue I see is, if it "alerts" to anything on the back seat, it may just come to be ignored anyway.

That's one ritual I have -- before closing the car door, or closing the trunk, I LOOK at my hand to be sure I have the keys. This is a lesson I learned a long time ago. Unfortunately, learning that lesson cost me a good bit of time, aggravation, and money. To make it even stupider, I locked the keys in the car with the engine running and my purse in the car, outside a store! And that was in the days before cell phones.
 
As a busy mom of three boys - I can tell you it is EASY to forget they are there, if they are asleep. We used to have the carseat in the front of seat - didn't forget them, then BUT things change and airbags became the norm so babies had to go in the back. It was my greatest fear that I would leave one but they managed to survive those years - yay!

The key thing is also what I do - even for the house. I keep the house key and car key separate (have locked myself out of both once or twice) We have always had a house lock that required the key to lock it - too easy to pull the door shut and forget. Also - my car doesn't have a key slot for the trunk so I have to open the car and unlock that from the door. There is an electronic lock but I NEVER think to use it - old habits die hard. Besides that, anyone nearby can record that signal and open your car so.... Are we that lazy and stupid to rely on electronics for everything? I try to think I'm not....
 
I saw that before Haunted, good invention by a smart young man. If it saves one life, it's worth it.
 
I saw him on TV. He's quite a little genius. His invention could save a lot of lives in the future. Our young people are so worth all we invest in them. I wish this boy the best luck with his invention. :eek:

That's a good thing. One time years ago, I got out of my truck, flung the locked door shut...realized at the last second that I left the keys in the ignition. Reached for the door to stop it from shutting....it did shut, and caught my thumb in between the locked door and door frame.

And there was my keys, I could see them dangling from the ignition, as I stood there, with my thumb caught in the [locked] door.

Things got ugly....:nightmare::sour::ambivalence::uncomfortableness:
 
Hardly a day goes by, this time of year, without a report of someone leaving a small child, or a pet, in a hot car....somewhere in the nation. With so many people having their minds on other issues....work, finances, errands, AND their cell phones, etc...it's easy to see how this keeps happening. I can't see a person doing this intentionally, but anyone who is transporting a child or pet needs to take that extra moment and check the car before leaving it. One habit I've had for several years, is to Never lock/unlock the vehicle with the key...instead I always use the remote, and listen for the sound of the horn honk as I'm walking away . On a couple of occasions, that has reminded me that I have something in the back seat or trunk that I need to bring with me.
 
Brilliant ! I wish him much success with his device because there are obviously adults who don't have as much sense as this child. We have some brilliant children in this world and that's a good thing for we seniors too.
