1950s Men's Buckle Back Pants

Yup, I remember those becoming the "fashion" back in the late 50's, when I was in high school. I bought a couple, but didn't care for them....it seems that whenever sitting at the school desk, there was always something "prodding" my lower back/behind.

I was in the Navy in the late 50s, we didn't have them.

I was born in the mid 50's...so I can't say I ever remember any of those types... but even if any of my relatives wore them later into the 60's I wouldn't have known because they'd either have a jacket or a sweater or waistcoat on which would probably have covered that belt..

At least one source credits the folks at Levi's with introducing cinch back trousers as early as 1872, where its function was to tighten the waist in an age when belts were not commonplace.

It makes sense at a time when standardized clothing sizes were still being developed so the average person would purchase a pair of trousers that were close in size and then cinch them up for a better fit.

That fashion trend must not have made it to the rural Pacific NorthWET of those years. Of course Ivy League and logging camps didn't have a great deal in common.

Never saw them, but loved bell bottoms back in the day, when clothes were still in fashion. (Come to think about it, this was about the same time clothes went out of style.)

I remember it was in the 60's...My boyfriend had the belted back on his trousers....I don't remember when they changed....
In the sixties guy's had to wear long pants and girls had to wear skirts or dresses, No Jeans!!!!!!

The ones that I had, had little elasticated tabs
with buttons and button holes at each side,
never saw any with that arrangement at the
back and as Don says they would be uncomfortable.

Mike.

I remember them. If you were dating someone steady, you wore them buckled. If you were looking, you wore unbuckled. Or vice versa. I’m 80 and don’t remember which

My dad wore them on special occasions. The buckle-back made a come-back when my oldest son was a toddler, but on casual slacks. I bought him a pair in every available color; khaki, dark brown, navy blue, and red. Had to have the red ones!
