1964 movie "Seven Days in May"

IMO, a fantastic movie. I love Ava Gardner. She’s amazing in ‘Night of the Iguana.’

Another of my favorite actors, Martin Balsam was in ‘Seven Days in May.’ He was great in ‘The Bedford Incident.’

Balsam was also in ‘On The Waterfront’ that was filmed in Hoboken, NJ. Many scenes were filmed at Pier A, Holland American Lines where my uncle was a longshoreman and he appears uncredited in the movie.

I have four photos of my uncle with a couple of the actors; one of him with Martin Balsam, one with Lee J. Cobb, one with Karl Malden (dressed as a priest) and the actor who played KO Dugan. I don’t know his real name.

I’m telling this story because the actors and film crew had access to a free cafeteria truck. Martin Balsam took my uncle and another longshoreman ‘Micky O’Dell’ to that truck for the free sandwiches and coffee and they talked about sports. Balsam was a Brooklyn kid and loved sports.

Balsam is buried in the same cemetery as my wife.

A very important, and I think very modern film at the time, After the Bay of Pigs, JFK's assassination, and other events, presidential politics and world conflict was very in vogue in 1964, When "May" was released. Ironically, just the month prior to "May's" release, Dr. Strangelove had opened, satirizing the whole shebang.

I too was a Martin Balsam fan. He was in so many great pictures, but two favorites that come to mind are 12 Angry Men, and his memorable role as Detective Arbogast in Psycho.
