1970-Did You Get Your Flying Car?

We have a nationwide network of highways called: Motorways. Most are three lanes wide on each side with an additional lane known as the hard shoulder, for use if you need to stop in an emergency.
A driver was caught by police travelling at 167mph on one such motorway. He asked police, when they finally managed to stop him, was I going to fast?"
The police officer, not without a sense of humour, replied: "Too fast? No Sir. You were flying too low!"

An idea that never took off (Pardon the pun).
I would guess that it may be because of the large blades that made it so cumbersome, and tiny wheels that a pothole would swallow. Similar to the Amphicar designed in the 60's to go both on land and in the water. Trying to do two different things well is problematic.

Maybe the quad-copters of today will change all that, as the blades are much smaller. Who knows if they will ever be affordable by most people. Then there is the problem with distance between refueling. Where can you land to get it done?

Flying cars are too expensive to develop. Can you imagine the number of air traffic control towers and personel required to make it safe? There are no lanes to keep traffic in check.
That's true. And I'm sure one would need a pilot's license to operate one. Common use of flying cars will doubtless be in the future. But right now it's still science fiction.
