1st year retirement....what to look out for

If you go to SS office in your last year of work and get it set up, pick a starting date, then when you do retire, it isn't a worry when checks start.

My first and subsequent years of retirement have been pretty much as I expected, and pleasantly surprised at times. If you live within your means, it is an enjoyable time of life.

Worried that I should still be working and making money. Also thought I had to join the Seniors Centre groups to make friends. I had only work colleagues and my 3 friends had passed away. Joined several groups right away, did not really care for the people. A former work colleague (friend now though) told me, God arranges for the right people to show up as friends at the right time. I believe that is true. At some point I will make some new friends but I'm not going to be desperate to meet new friends.

I knew I was going to have separation anxiety from my paycheck….I did not know I would have a bit of an identity crisis. Learning to budget different can also be a learning curve…

Getting used to being retired...not going to work, etc. It took a while for both of us - maybe 2 years, but now we love it. Been retired 6 years. Remember, you aren't going to take it with you even if they do sew bigger pockets in your shroud, as my mother used to say so our advice is to find a nice happy medium between going hog wild and becoming a skinflint (assuming you have done the basic math prior to retirement and know you have enough to support the lifestyle you wish to accommodate you.)

Be patient with yourself...it takes time.
