20 Depression-Era Foods that have vanished.

I can't remember any of those, my nan was an amazing cook, and two dishes that were always a hit were her porcupine meatballs, they didn't have porcupine in them it was minced meat seasoned and added raw rice and cooked in a tomato soup, it was delicious, as the meatballs cooked the rice would stick out, hence the name porcupine.
I have often cooked it, and my Children and the grandferals love it.

The other one was her creamed rice, the rice was left in the pot overnight, and then she added 1 cup of nearly boiled milk and a can of sweetened condensed milk, she would add some Vanilla and powdered sugar.

Seriously it is to die for.

This woman could make anything taste good with the exception of Hagas *Shudder*

I inherited her Grease Jars and use them often.

The depression chocolate cake or Wacky Snack Cake is still a great value when you need a small rich cake.

Potatoes in any form were on the table three times a day when I was a kid. We used to have them in fifty pound sacks and now I buy them one at a time as a rare treat.

Creamed codfish was something we looked forward to in the winter, served over baked potatoes. Today that would be in the luxury class.

Baked bean sandwiches on white bread with a squirt of ketchup were something my grandmother made for us and I still enjoy them.

It’s interesting how times change.

We never had any sort of takeout or delivery foods until the 70s. We would cook a couple of eggs and make some toast.

Instead of a five dollar bag of Doritos we would pop a pan of corn.

What were the favorite day before payday foods in your house growing up, and what are they today.

Pancakes and French toast are still high on my list. 🐷🐷🐷

I remember porcupine meatballs made with a can of Campbell’s cream of tomato soup.

We used to have leftover boiled white rice for breakfast!

Ours was warmed in a little whole milk and topped with sugar and cinnamon.
 
@Aunt Bea Pancakes and French toast, I still love them, latkes ( potato cakes) and Borscht were amazing. (she pinched the recipe from my Grandfather He was Russian) Baked beans on toast were and still are a favourite.
Oh, and her apple strudel Yumm, lest I forget her potato and leek soup, and let me tell you, she never threw away the potato peels they were in there too.
I almost forgot her bread and butter pudding, it was unreal.
