2019 is starting off badly

This year is starting off to be a real pain in the neck. Our nice weather has disappeared, and we are looking at an extended period of colder and snowy weather. Then, a couple of hours ago, we lost power...the entire area seems to be down. Luckily, I've got a generator, and an outdoor wood furnace, with enough wood to last several weeks, so while it's going to be inconvenient, I should have enough gas to get by for the next 10 to 15 hours before I have to go searching for a gas station which still has power. If we don't get power back in the next couple of hours, I may have to check on a couple of the elderly neighbors to see if they need to stay with us until things get back to normal.

I hope this first couple of weeks in January is not an indicator of what 2019 is going to look like.
 

Sorry to hear that Don, glad you have the generator and furnace to get you through this. You're very kind to check on your neighbors to see if they need help during this power outage. Hope things are back to normal soon, take care and be safe.
 
Power outage is the pits. I've been thru several, most recent last summer. Hot, humid, no A/C, I thought I'd die.... almost had to have someone come get me.
Nice of you to check on neighbors.

We're expecting a winter storm. I made sure I have what I need for next several days.

Sorry to hear about this Don. We are waiting to see what will happen in the next several hours in New Jersey. There are no predictions that are alike. It seems to be a very unpredictable storm and a fine line between huge amounts of snow and just a dusting. We have a generator so as long as I can keep my freezers going and one room warm for my bird I'm happy.
 
How often do you have power outages, Don, and how long do they usually last? Since moving here, we seem to have around a half dozen each year but only one has lasted more than 2-3 hours (that one lasted for a day and a half). We have a small generator that will power the basics so we try to make a game of it ... sort of like "camping out".

My radio news station said that there was a
big winter storm in North America & Canada
and if we are flying there in the next day or
two, to contact the airline to see that the
flight is not cancelled.

Hope your power stays on, Don- and everyone else in the path of this storm. I just heard CT will only get 3-6 in for most of the state, but then rain, which will freeze when the arctic air comes in from the north. Brrrr. Staying in.
 
My son and DIL are in Vail, CO right now for a few days...they live in Illinois, right across the river from St.Louis...I’m hoping they don’t have flight delays etc.

That area doesn’t get too much snow although last week they got 9 inches! They do get a very bad ice storm every January though.

There was a bad one the year they got married on January 24th and all the guests who flew in for the wedding had flights cancelled.

That meant an extra day with my family and it was the best.

One January though when my daughter in law just had her 3rd son at the end of September they lost power for 3 days. Luckily they were able to get a room in a hotel in St.Louis.
 
We got lucky, and the power outage only lasted about 5 hours. The outdoor lights came back on shortly after 11PM, so I shut the generator off, and reset the house circuit breakers and all is well this morning. The neighbors came over about 9PM, as they had no means to heat their house without electricity....so we chatted, and played some games, etc. As soon as power came back on they went back home to check on things, and outside of their house being a bit chilly, they, too, came out ok. We're always watchful of them, as they both have health issues.

This is the first time, in over 5 years that I've had to resort to the generator...most power outages we experience are just a short "blip"...our local rural electric Co-Op does a great job. I'll be curious to find out what caused this one.

As for those living in the Eastern states...get ready for an Arctic blast, and the potential for some heavy snowfalls.
