4th of July in Los Angeles

We started hearing explosions about 8:30 last night, just as it was getting dark. By 9:00 it was a continuous rumble with the occasional really loud bang, and it went on well past midnight.

Here's a video taken at the Griffith Observatory, about 3 miles east of us. We don't have such a panoramic view, but we can see the large office buildings downtown, which the video pans past several times. It's a wonder that the whole city wasn't set ablaze.

It was similar in my neighborhood from dark until midnight then things began to settle down.

It amazes me how professional and how expensive some of the bootleg fireworks have become.

The police helicopters were also in the air but nothing was done to enforce the law. When so many people are breaking the law about all they can do is attempt to keep a lid on things.

At times like this, I try to remember what it's like to be young but I can honestly say that when I was young it was never like this.

I lucked out. It was mostly quiet around here. I did hear a few fireworks over a 20-30 minute time span as I was trying to go to sleep. Thing is, I'm more on the edge of town with dry grass hills not far from me and plenty of trees in this area. Scary. And those with the fireworks are dangerous and stupid.

One of my golf buddy's son has four fireworks tents. They had a record year. The four stands sold just over $200,000 in fireworks. Fireworks can only be sold in our community from July 1st through July 4th. The morning they opened, had a gentleman walk into one of the tents. "I hear there could be a shortage of fireworks this year." They told him that was being predicted. "Well, put me together $5,000 worth!"

We go to a high spot about a mile west of our home. Sheesh!!!! Nobody must be short on money! Beautiful display from just before dark until almost midnight. Lots of warnings about dogs. They say more dogs are lost during the 4th holidays due to them running off, scared of the noise. Our Angel doesn't seem bothered at all. We rescued her about 2 1/2 years ago. Last 4th, she didn't seem to even notice the noise. This year... the same! We even took her with us to go watch the fireworks. Lot bangs all around us and she just laid in the grass or sat on our laps. Never flinched. Now... when a firetruck went past she had to "screech" trying to mimic the siren!!!!
