My first car was a Gremlin. I think I paid less than $2000 for it. Worked for me. Car was so inexpensive that there was no glovebox door. Just an open area for the glovebox. Manual trans, no a/c, no extras of any

I had a '77 Chevy Monza, manual trans. Terrible piece of garbage. It spent more time in the shop, than on the road. The guy I sold it to abandoned it in a fast food parking lot, two months after buying it. I got the call because he never registered it in his name.

The 1970s were inarguably dark times for the American auto industry. In its day, however, the Ford Pinto was a decent car for what it was - serviceable basic transportation for under $2000. Its main competitor on the other hand, the Chevrolet Vega, was one of the worst cars ever foisted on the public. The poster child for "built-in obsolescence", the Vega was designed from the ground up as a "throw-away". It amazes me that it lasted for seven years.
