Burns and Ferencz are my role models. Do you have one?
My mother was my role model for staying young and lucid. Until she was 90 she made sure she had something to look forward to everyday...book club, line-dancing (she taught it until age 83), church and church-luncheons and bazaars, oil paintings and watercolors. She loved to read and treated her books as if treasures...and shared them with others.
She walked everyday in the neighborhood and all the children knew her as Miss Shirley and would often come to visit her. I was always amazed at how happy they were to see her...like she was their best friend. She would bring out her art supplies so they could sketch and color.
She would plan outings to museums, botanical gardens, historical tours, antiquing, dining out, visiting shut-ins, volunteering in the community at the food bank and Habitat For Humanity. She did push-ups on the floor in her eighties. She cut out her favorite cartoons from the newspaper, made booklets from them, and the neighborhood children would love them.
She made notes of favorite quotes and stories in journals. Saved all letters and cards. Hand made cards to send to friends, family, and church members. And threw small dinner parties in her home...always a beautiful table setting. Her home was pristine yet never had a housekeeper.
All of this while she was in her 80's and 90's.
