Good news he was taken off the road before something happened. His own fault common knowledge many police department look for drunk drivers around the holidays.

“While conducting a field sobriety test, it was determined that the driver was more than 3 times the legal limit [at] .25% blood alcohol content,” police said.

The man was placed under arrest for suspicion of DUI and driving on a suspended license.

What made them suspicious the amount of opened cans or the sobriety test?

I knew a dude back in the day whose back seat floor of his 59 Ford was at least six inches deep in empty beer cans and bottles. I'm sure that was way more than 70.
Heard too many stories like that

Had to get someone out of jail for dui who insisted they weren't drunk yet admitted to about a dozen beers at a gathering then restaraunt prior yet I got to there about 4 hours after arrested and they still smelled like rocket fuel.

The police gave him/us a few hours get his car off the road before towed. Had to have another person drive me to the vehicle found about 10 empties on the floor seat etc in plain view. Didn't get the stuff that rolled or bounced somewhere just wanted to clean to drive it off that road and park some where.

How many don't get caught with that type of consumption?

Are we to actually believe that he consumed 840 oz/6.6 gallons of beer in one sitting... then decided to go for a drive?
A bachelor friend of mine while I was married drove some model of a Honda and threw all his beer cans on the floor in back. He would give them a toss over his shoulder. We were going to a baseball game and I asked him to stop and get a giant bag of peanuts that a grocery sold near us. He did and on the way to the stadium he’s eating peanuts and throwing the shells on the floor.

His car was basically a garbage dump for him. After that episode, I wouldn’t let him drive anymore if we went away together. I drove and handed him a kitchen size garbage bag and told him to put his empty cans, candy bar wrappers and peanut shells into the bag. To my surprise, he complied.

Could be he was navigating a mobile BYOB on wheels or it was California’s latest entry in the "Hold My Beer" Olympics.
Either way, the only thing he was steering was poor life choices and now he's likely floating down a river of regret 🤷‍♂️
Hopefully, this becomes the turning point he needs before regret becomes something far worse.

Hm. If that was from one day, then it must have been some really weak beer.
