According to the news, 75-year-old Salman Rushdie, an author known for free expression and who had received death threats for his writing, was at a lecture south of Buffalo, NY when someone came on stage and attacked him. Rushdie was taken to the hospital. That's sad that it happened on U.S. soil. What is this world coming to?

Pics show event security and there was an armed state trooper in uniform who was one of the first to get to Rushdie. Read that Rushdie has complained about too much security at prior events.
 
Free speech is supposed to enable anyone to say whatever. And in a perfect world that may be true. But, realistically, that doesn't mean that you aren't liable for what you say. In Rushdie's case, you can't anger religious zealots, and not expect blowback in some form. While I don't condone beating up the guy, the incident was not totally unexpected.

The issue that devout Muslims (in particular) have with Rushdie's writing is that he has broken specific religious rules that are considered unforgivable sins. Rushdie knew that's what he was doing, and he knew that even making his stories fictional didn't make it less sinful / more forgivable.

OH No, that's terrible, .. poor man.. however as others have stated , he knew the dangers of appearing live.. not condoning this attack in any way shape or form.. but I feel that we've probably seen the last of him in public. If he survives this he'll be a very foolish man to not keep himself away from the public eye.. .. and I do hope he survives

It's not over. The fatwa is still in effect. Mr. Rushdie is on a ventilator (article linked below).

I read that Mr. Rushdie was in seclusion for 9 years, living under a fake name.

Chautauqua Institution is located south of Buffalo,NY takes about 1hr 1/2 to get there. I've been there a few times over the years. I'm surprised of 2 things,1. why Rushdie was chosen to come speak since he has received death threats over the yrs 2. there were no security checks as people came thru the gates. I'm sure this will change after this incident

The Harry Potter writer and free speech campaigner - who has been pilloried by trans activists for her beliefs on gender - had expressed her horror at the sickening attempt on Rushdie's life in upstate New York when she was issued the chilling threat on Twitter.

Meer Asif Aziz, who describes himself on Twitter as a 'student, social activist, political activist and research activist' based in Karachi, has made tasteless 'jokes' about how to destroy Israel and branded it and Putin-savaged Ukraine - as well as Pakistan's chief geopolitical rival India - 'terrorist states'.

Aziz also appears to support the Supreme Leader of Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who frequently rants about Israel in deranged, genocidal tweets. In one of Khamenei's posts about the 'oppressive Yazidis', for instance, Aziz responded with a heart emoji.

And responding to another tweet from the Iranian dictator, Aziz gushed : 'Dear leader your struggle for Islamic world will not be wasted until we young generation are with you'.

Rowling, 57, had posted last night about Rushdie's stabbing: 'Horrifying news. Feeling very sick right now. Let him be ok'.

Aziz, who had described Rushdie's alleged attacker Hadi Matar, 24, as a 'revolutionary Shia fighter', then threatened: 'Don't worry you are next'
 
They say it was about a 20 sec attack, over 10 stab or slice wounds. Stabbing or knifing people in essentially hand to hand combat is not easy. Have to wonder if the attacker was hyped up on emotion or drugs. He had a buggered eye stare in his arrest photo. In the end damage was done.

Religion, like politics, can become very heated. Muslims, acknowledge and believe that the ten commandments given to Moses, and revered by Jews and Christians, are just as important in their Islamic faith.
Thou shalt not kill is not qualified. For example, it does not say: Thou shalt not kill, except in self-defence. But as I said previously, religion can get very heated, to the point where commandments like thou shalt not kill, are conveniently overlooked, when the brain overloads.

But don't forget, there are situations in the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran where killing is completely justified and even rewarded. And they have nothing to do with self-defense.
