8 Dead at Astroworld Concert In Houston

What I saw on the local news was unbelievable.. the crowd of people crashing the gates to get in .... it was mob rule!
They said there were smashed phones, glasses, etc., all around the ground at the entrance.

And this was only the start of what was to come.

UPDATE:
An afternoon news conference, with Houston officials, is now focusing on something even more disturbing in all of this ..

Someone (s) in the crowd was injecting people with a syringe -- a security guard felt a stab of a needle in the neck! ... and he went down unconscious immediately.
So now, they have a criminal investigation started.

This was just craziness!! I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing on the news report. Why did they start storming the stage. Apparently the producer, who was also the performer on stage at the time, felt unsafe. It breaks my heart that people were killed, particularly a 10 year old. I think concerts, even outdoor ones, are a bad idea during this pandemic.

@Bonnie I was wondering why it was reported that people had passed out even before the stampede. Your update shed light on why that probably happened. This world we live in now...I just don't know!! :sneaky:

That's been going on in London for awhile now.... young women are or were, boycotting some bars and clubs until their security could cope.

  • Security officer fell unconscious: Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said one security officer said he was stuck in the neck Friday night during Astroworld when trying to restrain a concert-goer. "We do have a report of a security officer, according to the medical staff that was out and treated him last night, that he was reaching over to restrain or grab a citizen and he felt a prick in his neck. When he was examined, he went unconscious, they administered Narcan," Finner said during a news conference Saturday. "He was revived and the medical staff did notice a prick similar to what you would get if somebody was trying to inject. That is one part of it." There were "several instances where they did administer Narcan on scene," Houston Fire Chief Samuel Peña said when asked if medical personnel at the festival administered Narcan, a “save shot” or a “rescue shot” because of its ability to bring someone back from an overdose.

Said 'several people' needed Narcan ....

Stampedes are nothing new. We saw them in stores when the doors are opened to waiting crowds of adults, mostly women holiday bargain hunters. In this case the planners had to known the people would attempt to get as close to the stage as possible. I never understood going to event where there were crowds of young people mostly that are high. Woodstock after the crowd went home was an ecological disaster that smelled to high heaven. Sad, stupid, tragic.

Remember the Who concert stampede back in 1979?
The Who concert disaster occurred on December 3, 1979, when British rock band The Who performed at Riverfront Coliseum (now known as Heritage Bank Center) in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States, and a rush of concert-goers outside the Coliseum's entry doors resulted in the deaths of 11 people.

I went to a rock festival around '77 or '78 where we were admitted to the grounds but security told us we had to watch the bands from behind a fence, pretty far away from the stage. It was at Watkins Glen racetrack in upstate NY. The bands, from what I remember, were Blue Oyster Cult, Foghat, Johnny Winter, Uriah Heep I think, and one other band. I remember there were five bands.

Immediately after being told we had to watch from behind the fence, as good, drunken and stoned rock fans are wont to do, we responded with a resounding "F*CK YOU!" and everyone climbed over the fence, which was probably only six feet tall. Now that I think about it, we were probably in the grandstands area where people sat and watched the races. The fence was probably to protect spectators from flying debris.

Once we got near the stage, we sat down and fired up doobies, and as far as I know, everyone was peaceful. But it was a dumb thing for the festival promoters to do and we weren't about to stand for it. :ROFLMAO:

We'll find out what happened at this Houston rap concert and whether somebody screwed up royally.

Saw on the news that the FBI is involved in the investigation now.

They should be ... there are so many unanswered questions to this whole thing, and the lawsuits are flying in every direction now.

Found out that the Houston Fire Department was denied access to the concert area until 9:30 that night, when it was already too late.

How in heck does anyone deny a fire department access??? How does that happen???

Outrageous!

The whole thing sounds totally insane..

And why do people let little kids go to these "events" .. there is a 9 year old boy in the hospital in a coma from this, along with several others severely injured. Their stories will come out later.

Not surprising given the antisocial nature of Rap music and many of their fans. As someone in the SFBA that over decades has seen myriad Classic Rock concerts in a wide range of venues, one would never witness that kind of selfish mass gate crashing in our region though individuals have always tried. That noted, a rock concert in some other state or country where the cultural vibe is less experienced, more violent is a different issue, especially where alcohol drinking is dominant. That played out at the Cincinnati Who concert in an era many young people in many mid country states were going to concerts for the first time.

Crowd stampeding is an inherent risk in all large crowds that promoters are responsible for addressing. It is absolutely safe to have outdoor rock concerts here in California where fans can stand anywhere in front of stages because people are experienced, not so aggressive. On the other hand, I would not trust an outdoor Rap concert in Oakland. It is easy to structure areas for standing crowds in front of stages by creating a set of chest high separation barriers so those further back cannot exert much pressure moving forward. I and most other rock fans absolutely hate usual assigned seating where greedy promoters install rows of portable chairs in front of outdoor rock concert stages. Live rock music was made to be experienced standing on one's feet.

Saw an interview on the news today where a dad was telling the interviewer how his 9 year old son fell from his shoulders and was still in the hospital after being trampled during the concert melee.

The thing I don't understand is why would any responsible parent take their 9 year old kid to a rap concert? I don't listen to rap music but it's my understanding it often deals with language and other content matter that wouldn't be considered suitable for children. There were also several other concert goers interviewed and many of them looked really young - well under 18 years of age. Again, I don't get it. Where are the parents of these kids?

I only saw reports that mentioned the officer needing Narcan because he was stuck in the neck. I haven't read any more articles though. I also saw that the youngest fatality was 14, not 10 but that's still tragic.

@David777 Not all Rap is anti-social. In fact, some of it is educational. The problem is that many record company execs were puhing"Gangsta Rap" because it plays into the stereotype of Black males and Black people in general. I know this because about 30 years ago (give or take), I managed the Rap group my son produced and performed with. He also produced his BFF's tracks...also quite positive, one even glorifying the knowledge young people could get from senior citizens. The contents of the songs, positive in nature, are still relevant to this day but record company execs didn't want that. My son also produced and performed with another group imparting positive messages for young people. They signed a contract to do one record. Both groups received positive feedback from their fans, at Rap competitions, at their other performances and from radio deejays at the concerts scouting talent. During that time, the negative Rap was taking off and unfortunately, that's what sold. My son was heavy into Hip Hop (Rap) 30 years ago but has become disillusioned with the "garbage" that's out there now.
@MrPants I don't understand why any parent would take their child either. But as we have seen with so many varying incidences, some parents just don't use common sense.

Along with everything else that doesn't make any sense .... the following is an ad for "Security" for the concert. ... $10 an hour, and they were "trained" the day before. ... HOW COULD ANYTHING GO WRONG

And to David's post above... drinking wasn't an issue, probably about the only thing that wasn't an issue!!
Drugs caused a huge problem ... and people being injected w/o knowing.
