$8 dollars for a slice of Watermelon ,. Anyone fancy a life in Alaska ?

When I lived there, the town often ran out of milk and eggs, butter and flour. "The barge won't be here till a week from Wednesday!"
No one ever complained. You know why?
THE MAGIC of living in a wild, free, untamed, wonderful place far outweighed any little vagaries!

I can't explain it. It's like asking me to describe eating a tangerine! "Skagway" was INCREDIBLE! I drove into Skagway and it was like traveling
back in time a hundred years! I was HOME!
The people who live there are heartier, stronger. They let things of no concern pass without mention. It was truly amazing!

Some people love Alaska. Don't ask me why but hunters and fisherman consider it like Nirvana. :giggle: It wouldn't be for me.
When they had that one Home and Garden TV show about people moving to Alaska, I don't think there was one person who wasn't talking about killing wildlife. I never got that. I'd want to see them if I could, not kill them.

I wondered if people would drive and stock up on supplies.

Here is another from a channel I've watched. Not Alaska.
I lived in Sitka, which was an island. You would have to fly out to the lower 48 for supplies.
In the mainland Alaska, there were ways you could order food or small things and have them
flown out to the bush for you. People would order a cheeseburger from Anchorage
and have it flown out to them!

how rich do you need to be to spend $1200 per month on groceries..? It makes one wonder, if these people were to move to somewhere cheaper in the future, that they would be horrified at the money they wasted..

Many people move to Alaska for the big wages. They have the money to buy what they want.

Many love hunting for their own meat. There’s fresh air and neighbours can be far away. It’s a different lifestyle and I’m glad that they enjoy it.

Also, Every man, woman and child in Alaska gets oil money every year which I think is around $1500. (per person)
People who have a lot of children get quite a little bonus.
Also, People are so kind and help each other in ways I've never seen in the lower 48.

Didn’t Pete (I can’t remember his SF name) live in Alaska. He had moved south and was really missing it.
Sorry, I don't know who that was.
I know if your car breaks down you instantly have a dozen people peering under the hood of your vehicle.
I better not take over this thread. I could talk about the wonders of Alaska forever!

The future ..... have read that the future of farming in the US could depend on Alaskan farmland.
In years to come, with massive droughts in the lower 48, they are already selling acreage for farming.
We may not be here to see it, but as climate change continues, they are looking to Alaska for the answers to growing food, as the planet heats up.

I've watched some videos from this channel. Apparently the woman works from home. Not sure what the man does. I mean it looks like an amazing place. I don't know about being there year round, permanently.
