That's shocking that so many people haven't got a full grasp on literacy... although 8million sounds far too many as a percentage of just 66 million as a population...
Still it seems to be happening all over...

IMO basic readin', writin', and 'rithmatic are gradually being replaced by various forms of intuitive communication or advanced computer-based systems similar to Grammarly.
That's appalling. I knew there was some illiteracy but didn't realise it was so bad. That might explain why so many appliances come with illustrations instead of written instructions.

Good question. Perhaps the survey is including illegal immigrants who have not had an education.

That was my first thought.... but with the American stats at 36 million...surely there can't be 36million illegal immigrants, so there must be another reason for it there...

sadly 21% of the USA is also functionally illiterate ... so there must be something going wrong somewhere...

Our society has been on the decline since the 70s, when all this 'progressive attitude' came in. It was a social experiment which has failed. Time to get back to decent standards and attitudes. At the moment, teachers are struggling to maintain discipline, which means the children's education is neglected.
I've said this before and I'll say it again...where I live there are a large number of schools, and the ones with the best academic record are the church schools. My own children attended church schools, which were strict on rules, discipline and decent behaviour. This is what our society is lacking.
