A Co-Workers Observations on Animal Lifestyles

This happened a long time ago, but I remember what he said.

The lions have it right. The male sleeps in the shade all day while the females go out to bring back the gazelle and take care of the cubs. The male also gets to eat the meat first and has his pick of many females.
Penguins, on the other hand, got it backwards. In a monogamous relationship, the female lays an egg then relegates its care to the male who has to tend it and keep it warm during the harshest part of the Antarctic winter while the female goes off on a 4 month fishing trip. When she returns, the chick get to eat of her catch while the male is in a state of near starvation.
