A new chapter in life

Like some people here I’m looking for a place to share & help forget some of the loneliness. So at 66 I’m grateful that my health has been good and that I still have many interests that keep me going both physically & mentally. I am a transplant from Southern California that retired to the Ozarks going on 20 years now. It’s a very rural area & most of my friends/neighbors have passed or moved closer to their children. Also, for the last year I’ve been single after a very long relationship so it’s a new chapter in my life that I was unprepared for. The closest anything is about 20 miles so my only social interaction is the weekly trip to the grocery store. So I’m hopeful to meet some people here and get a little social action between my grocery runs…

So being a retired Engineer I’m into all the geek stuff & DIY things around the house. I always loved my career and never thought of it as work so I still find myself designing things to make – kinda born this way...

Welcome 1955, I hope you enjoy your time here,

The Ozarks are beautiful country, I've visited there numerous times.

What are your hobbies?

You were born the same year as me.. great year that was...(y)

Welcome from a fellow engineer. I was single after losing my wife of 30 years. I spent my time traveling to places my late wife have no interest in going.
After a trip I wrote,"at this point my life is at a crossroads. I have no idea when my next trip is or where it will be to. Time will tell"
When I came back from my last trip in October, I said I had no idea where I would be going next, but I did not want to be traveling alone again. Well, life is funny that way, because I met a wonderful lady, who is a widow and has sons about the same age as mine. We were married on the Island of Santorini a year and a half after we met.

Retired electronics engineer, same age, recently widowed, transplanted to Nebraska after a lifetime in Las Vegas. I know the feeling, what Dilbert calls "the knack". I still work on some embedded designs even though there's no customer now, just for fun, something I've enjoyed doing the last 45 or so years. I do miss the Nevada desert, especially when it snows all day long. Not enough to go back, for reasons I'll leave off due to the no politics policy.

What are your hobbies?
Designing/building stuff, fixing things, machining, ham radio, FPV drone flying, boating, computers, electronics, home automation etc… For the last year I’ve been ignoring all the gardening stuff. I will probably continue with the simpler things like peppers, black berries & asparagus after I get over my doldrums. Right now all my plots are covered to keep the weeds out.
C'mon in, the water's fine :giggle:
Yeah I miss the ocean – Lakes are just not the same but there are no sharks!
You get the privilege of being the first person I ever get to welcome.
Thanks, we’re all on a ride it’s just different for each of us. All we can do is learn how to accept the things we cannot control and grow from experiences we find ourselves in. It sounds like you have accomplished both!

My first experience with embedded designs was with the RCA COSMAC 1802. Back then we used it to drive ATE for testing telephones when we made them in the USA. Now I mess around with the Teesny & RPi boards – wow what a difference a few decades make!
I hope to retire to the Ozarks. Beautiful country. Lower cost of living than the cities.
Yep, that was my thinking which allowed me to retire early. It’s was a shocker getting used to the weather. Coming from CA I really didn’t know how serious the weather can be.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes.
