RIP
What a horror. Brings back thoughts of the disastrous fire twenty years ago at The Station nightclub in Rhode Island when 100 people were trapped and killed in a fire while at a Great White performance.

Nighclubs and bars pack people in, and woe to attendees when something goes awry.

I'm so sorry for the people who were there and their mourning families.

I heard about the fire last night and the first thing I thought was that it was a terrorist attack. I'm glad it wasn't. Here is a summary of what happened, courtesy of Google AI:

While a formal investigation into the January 1, 2026, tragedy is ongoing, witnesses and early reports indicate that the fire was likely caused by pyrotechnics used inside a crowded bar during New Year's Eve celebrations.

The fire broke out at approximately 1:30 a.m. at
Le Constellation
a popular bar and nightclub in the resort. According to witness accounts and early findings:
  • Champagne Sparklers: Multiple witnesses reported that waitresses or staff members were carrying champagne bottles with lit sparklers (or Roman candles). In one instance, a staff member being carried on another's shoulders reportedly held a bottle too close to the wooden ceiling, causing it to ignite instantly.
  • Rapid Spread: The fire spread across the wooden ceiling within seconds, leading to a flashover—a phenomenon where all combustible materials in an enclosed space ignite simultaneously.
  • Secondary Explosion: The rapid ignition of gases during the flashover caused what witnesses described as an explosion, though authorities have clarified that the fire caused the explosion and not an external device.
  • Existing Fire Ban: The town had previously banned unauthorized fireworks for the holiday due to an extremely high fire risk caused by a month-long lack of rainfall.
The incident resulted in at least 40 deaths and approximately 100 injuries. Authorities have officially ruled out terrorism and are treating the event as an accident.

That's exactly what flashed through my mind when I saw the story especially when they abbreviated New Years Eve to NYE.

Given not the US have to wonder what type of codes and design features were that building to help or hurt surviving or preventing a fire. I think it was Turkey over the last year or so also had a club fire.

What a terrible tragedy! People just out to have a good time. :( I heard a lot of them were likely young people too. I feel so sorry for their families, friends and those who were critically injured. May the deceased R.I.P. This reminds me of another fire event that happened in a club due to the band's pyro-technics. Mass casualties, but I forgot where it happened.

Exactly. Look at this pic of the bar. They carry their Champagne sparklers and the ceiling is already on fire.

They're saying today that it was caused by a waitresss.....not a waiter as has been reported up until now .. waving a sparkler firework stuck in a champagne bottle as she was sat on someone's shoulders... the firework caught the ceiling, and within seconds the places was on fire. The deaths occured mainly due to the fact they were in a basement and there was only one set of stairs to get out and most were killed as they tried to battle their way up the stairs.

One witness said they saw a young man sit down holding a crucifix, and they saw the fire literally go around him.... and he was unhurt

This video shows them shockingly continuing to dance and film the fire on their mobile phones... by the time they realised the real danger it was too late

New footage shows fire spread across Swiss nightclub ceiling

One Young female British tourist is among the missing... :(
