A Sad Day for Scottish Football

I have just heard some devastating news. One of the longest standing records in world soccer has fallen. And it was a Scottish club who held this record. Until recently Arbroath FC held the record of the highest victory by a senior team. Admittedly, the record was set back in the dark days of the 19th century. Probably when they used hand stitched balls made of thick cow hide! That result was Arbroath 36 Bon Accord 0. A day when the Arbroath goalkeeper enjoyed the luxury of sheltering under his umbrella, so little was he troubled by the opposition.

So, an Ecuadorian team has now snatched that result from the Scots. Sporting Club has defeated Indi Native by 44 - 1. How they managed that given the time it takes to re-spot the ball and restart the match, I have no idea. I suspect foul play here and demand a rematch. Let us Scots keep our record. :D

I have no knowledge of any of this and I am a pretty avid sport's follower here in the U.S. We have a saying over here, "Records are made to be broken." I was sad the day Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's homerun record for a career high and then when Roger Maris broke the Babe's record for a single season high of 61 without using any illegal drugs. I wasn't born in time to see Ruth played, but thanks to so many vintage sports reels on TV and at the movies, I have seen many highlight clips of his achievements. I am talking about baseball here, in case you don't know our game over here. I did get to see Mickey Mantle a few times, who was probably the second greatest long ball hitter in baseball.

The Arbroath/Bon Accord result is legend here. It is one of those records that most kids who follow soccer learn about early on. So, that is why it was noted when the Ecuadorians exceeded that defeat. However, the Arbroath result happened in 1885 when soccer was in its infancy and I suspect that it was not as fascinating then as it is now. I suppose that is what makes the Ecuadorian score more relevant.

BTW, in Scotland, Arbroath are a pretty minor senior club now. I have no idea what happened to Bon Accord. I think they folded not long after that result in 1885. However, the name has since been used by other teams to emerge in the NE of Scotland.

Wow. I have never seen scores like that watching football (soccer).

Hmmm.

Just ... hmmmm.

I can just see Simon Mignolet standing under an umbrella at Anfield!

No, neither have I and I used to run a youth team. Some of those scores got pretty high. But not that high.

Yeah. I mean, play 85 minutes and the score's still 0-0 and then two goals in the next 5 minutes and a winning goal in stoppage time? That I've seen.
