Personally i would discuss with the diagnosing doctor.

Did quick search because eye health so important. Found this fairly comprehensive article. It confirmed my thoughts that they would cleanse and numb the eyeball before administering the shot. I knew numbing possible because of my corneal implant and cataract removal surgeries in 2014.

I knew a man who was getting intravitreal injections for that purpose, but that was over 10 years ago. They were effective for him, enabling him to continue driving until almost 90, when he passed away. It seems I remember he needed the injection about once monthly, and they were very expensive. I happen to know he had traditional Medicare. If anyone has an Advantage plan, there may be preauthorization issues and out of pocket costs.

My eye surgeons had mixed opinions on Vabysmo.

One thought it was not worth having monthly injections if they only reduced the progression of wet AMD by 20% and the other thought that they were.

I declined the option.

IMO the monthly injections increase the risk of something going wrong.

I’m glad that I dragged my feet, my last visit to them in early June indicated that nothing substantial has changed and no follow-up appointments are necessary unless I notice a change.

My old Dad had Macular Degeneration, which really limited his activities in his later years. So, years ago, I talked to my eye doctor, and he recommended a daily Lutein/Zeaxanthin pill, and a fish oil capsule. As a result, my annual checkups show the Macula is remaining OK. I would recommend these daily pills, that cost only a few cents, as opposed to these expensive and potentially dangerous injections. However, these supplements only work if taken before the eyes begin to deteriorate.

I have advanced dry macular degeneration/geographic atrophy. I've researched the monthly eye injections available and they only reduce the progression very little over years of injections and follow up visits.

I talked it over with my husband and a couple of family members, they all agree with me that the risk is not worth it. They can cause immediate vision loss, detached retina, bleeding in the eye which would just lead to wet macular degeneration, infections, changes in eye pressure, etc.

My vision is not improving, but I accept my situation, although my sight is a bit blurred and reading, etc. is more difficult, I can live with that.

In the winter of my life, I don't want to spend my months in doctor's offices, getting injections that may make me completely blind. Also, the cost is outrageous, I can afford the shots, but my vision is more important to me than my bank account. If they could cure the condition, I might have considered them. My ophthalmologist, who is also the surgeon who performed my cataract surgery, said that I was right about the possible negative side effects, and it was a personal decision. He didn't push them, or criticize them, he remained neutral.

I bolded this post, because I think that @Gary O' has the same type of vision loss. I have been taking the Bausch and Lomb PreserVision AREDS 2, twice a day since February of 2023 as advised by any doctor I have spoken with.

Yes I would if I had Macular degeneration and a specialist recomended it.

Have known people who have had this and it has helped maintain their vision.
