A Silly If Not Crazy Idea For Popcorn

I enjoy poppcorn occasionally so I followed up on an internet thing that said "Try this for a great new taste for popcorn."
Step 1. Pop one bag of microwave popcorn.
Step 2. Melt four tablespoons of butter.
WHAT?! Four Tablespoons of butter?! Needless to say I clicked "EXIT" after Step 2 even though Step 3 was add a tablespoon of soy sauce...……..(on popcorn?)
Double yuck

Generic popping corn popped in a microwave popper. A shot of PAM spray. A dash of salt. Works for me.

I used to always prefered movie popcorn un buttered. I used to make it at home in our long-handled, old fashioned popper in my kitchen fireplace.

When the microwave bags came out, I went crazy! Years later I read microwave popcorn is really bad for you but forgot why, so no more corn.

A report from the FDA indicates that a chemical coating used in microwave popcorn bags breaks down when heated into a substance called perfluorooctanoic (PFOA). The Environmental Protection Agency has identified PFOA as a “likely carcinogen.” Another study has found an acid that can be extracted from the chemical causes cancer in animals and is “likely to cause cancer in humans.”

A second potential danger in microwave popcorn is diacetyl, an FDA-approved chemical found in the fake butter flavoring. There’s even a debilitating respiratory disease called “popcorn workers lung,” (the medical name of the condition is bronchiolitis obliterans) suffered by microwave popcorn factory workers caused by extended inhalation of the chemical’s fumes. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) concluded that diacetyl needs further study so that workers in the flavorings and snack industry are no longer at risk
The Food and Drug Administration continues to study whether consumers can develop lung disease from inhaling diacetyl. In response to the concerns regarding the risks of diacetyl exposure, a number of microwave popcorn manufacturers have discontinued using it in their products.

Yikes, HD... there it is. I see two things wrong but only one thing stopped. Last years at my friend's house, she made some micro wave popcorn. It tasted weird. I'v never tasted anything like it and it was bad, even trying 3 tims. Finally she had some and said what the....? We tossed it. Haven't had it since. And we used to even make it at work to eat at our desks!

Thanks for the info!

I really like buttered and salted popcorn but don't eat it very often.

Speaking of popcorn, remember popcorn balls ?......the older gal across the circle (she passed several years ago) used to make them for her grand kids when they'd visit for Halloween and she'd always give me a few.

I can't recall if they were made with syrup or caramel but I do remember them being really good. :)

PFOAs were banned by the FDA, so no longer an issue with microwaved popcorn...

In January 2016, the FDA finally banned the Teflon-like, grease-resistant chemical that’s been linked to various cancers, infertility, thyroid issues, and birth defects from being used in food packaging: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). That was great news since a study by the FDA found that up to 20 percent of PFOA levels in our bodies can come from consuming a mere 10 bags of popcorn a year.

Ah…popcorn
popped the ol' fashion way

My nosh nemesis

Huge steel mixing bowl

I begin with dainty fingerfuls
Three minutes later I can’t get enough into my yap with twin simultaneous heaping handfuls

Anyway, my lady introduced this to me many moons ago;
Butter, yes, but only enough to adhere to whatever topping is used
(Really don’t need that much, I found out)
Then parmesan (duh)
Then…get this…nutritional yeast flakes…sometimes called brewer’s yeast flakes

OOOOOh, yeeeaaaaah

Swill it down periodically with sun tea…I’m a happy dawg

WOOF!

I have a microwave popper and use Orville's popcorn. I also tried making caramel corn. It was good but too sweet. Also time consuming.

Im back to ordinary popcorn without butter or salt as a snack.

Life is all about not worrying about the unpopped kernels and just enjoying the good ones.

Drool! I want some. I’ve never made caramel corn, let alone, caramel cornballs. It would be sinfully good and my birthday’s coming up

Well I see this thread is full of health nuts. 4 tablespoons of butter (1/2 stick) for one bag of popcorn. Why not one gallon of ice cream versus a bowl for desert or perhaps a bucket of lard ??!!

when i was a kid the ladies at the church would make pop corn balls using molasses and and we would wrap them in wax paper and hang them on the christmas tree tied with ribbon-- so that is the only way i use to make them is with molasses and use an air popper
