True story about Jay. He was host of a very popular morning drive radio show decades ago in Charlotte. He was excellent as host, entertaining as could be, but intimidating as hell to guests on his show...in a funny way, but still! I didn't realize that was only his radio persona and he played it all too well. It kept the show # 1 in his time slot for as long as he was there.
I was about to get in line for Gyros at an outdoor Greek Festival. Jay and a couple guys walked up about the same time. I have no idea what came over me, but I did not want to be around him. I kept on walking rather than getting in line, so afraid he would tell me I was too heavy to be eating Gyros, or ask if I was having a bad hair day....typical of insults he barked all the time! I didn't have a weight problem, and my hair didn't look bad, but I knew him to be so aggressive and challenging, I was uncomfortable around him. He had me convinced he was a jerk.
I was so wrong. Decades later I saw him on many late night talk shows and what a sweetheart. I was so sorry to read today that he had passed away. RIP, Jay.
