Age 87 and Wondering How to Approach the End

I'm 87 years old. All my friends, brother, parents, uncles and aunts are dead. My geriatrician said I would die at 94. I have a huge abdomen and cannot drive a car anymore. My wife is still alive after 62 years of marriage. I live across the street from my daughter, her husband and one grandchild. I have two other grandchildren who live far away.

However, I enjoy playing chess on the internet at chess.com and also play Civilization VI. I am happy with my life. I rarely leave my house.

Are there any others in this forum in the same situation as me?

Not at all, fortunately. I am 84 and still living life to the fullest. Other than a fractured disc, I am generally healthy. For my birthday this year, I celebrated 50 years of flying by flying a plane up to Santa Barbara and back.
I still drive and make a weekly trip to our old house to move stuff here.

Enjoy your life and let the end take care of itself.

It’s true that our lives change and our world gets smaller, but we can still enjoy and be thankful for those closest to us.

The more time you spend thinking about others and their needs the less time you’ll have to spend thinking about yourself.

All the best to you and your family. 🤗

Is your geriatrician a psychic? How can she predict when you are going to die. That is not her call. This is a different case but I remember when I hurt my pinky toe many years ago on a brick fireplace. My toe nail came off...bled to the point I had to go to the emergency room. The doctor informed me my toe nail will not grow back.. it has grown so much I have to keep it clipped down. Continue to enjoy your life and not allow ANYONE predict your future.

I have started to think about end of life decisions lately.
I may only be 60 but so many people die "early".
I have nothing in place at the moment. No will, no care instructions, no plan on what happens if I become incapacitated.
I am an organ donor but who would know that at the time of my death?
I have no one I have confided in about these issues.
I think it is time I talk to my GP to get some advice about these important issues.

E4!

I am 88, I tell people that in 12 years I will be 100.

I drive up to see my wife age 87 at the nursing home every day. She has been there for a year and a half.

I believe that how you die is more important than when. My father went at 65 with cancer. My mother at 91 went to bed and didn't wake up. Which is better?

I'm nowhere close to your age. But I say that enjoy your wife, daughter, son-in-law and grandchild while you can, keep your memories close to your heart, and just live one day at a time. Do what you can that you enjoy most and know that you definitely lived a long life. :)
