New technology ‘extricates’ John Lennon’s voice from a ‘ropey little bit of cassette’ to create record

The Beatles final single will be released this year after being completed with the help of AI, Sir Paul McCartney has disclosed.

The musician said that advanced technology has been used to rescue the voice of John Lennon from a rough demo recording.

AI has “extricated” Lennon’s vocals and Paul has polished the track into what he has termed the “final Beatles record”.

Paul explained that new tech was “able to extricate John’s voice from a ropey little bit of cassette”.

Speaking on the Radio 4 Today programme, he added: “We had John’s voice and a piano and he could separate them with AI.

“They tell the machine. ‘That’s the voice. This is a guitar. Lose the guitar’.

“So when we came to make what will be the last Beatles’ record, it was a demo that John had [and] we were able to take John’s voice and get it pure through this AI.”
It has been reported that the song, possibly titled Now And Then, is one of a number on a cassette recorded by Lennon before his death and handed to Sir Paul by Yoko Ono in the 1990s.

Some songs had previously been recovered from the recording, but technology used in Peter Jackson’s Beatles documentary Get Back to identify and isolate individual band mates voices provided the technical leap forward in technology required to extract Lennon’s vocals from Now And Then.

It's amazing what can be done using AI these days. This new release is a great use of AI but there are pitfalls. A musician friend of mine mentioned how AI can aid in plagiarizing artists' works. There are other concerns as well but I'll post about them at some point in another thread about AI.
