Al Stewart -with the EmptyPockets
The Tramshed Cardiff 28th October 2019
I am not normally a fan of support acts-I wish the star would do another 30 minutes with an interval- but Chicago’s The EmptyPockets -who are also acting as Mr Stewart’s backing band-got the evening off to a great start.Member Erica has one of the best voices I have ever heard and if they ever tour in their own right I will be getting a ticket. They have plenty on YouTube.Must mention they played ‘ Video Killed the Radio Star’ with a guest Buggle.
Now the Tramshed is so called because it used to be just that and is quite an intimate venue holding just about 1000 people for a seated concert.Al cleverly ensured that songs everyone was familiar with came up regularly enough to keep this casual fan happy and interspersed the songs with some interesting chit chat-even got the words wrong on one song-but kept going!
He didn’t play Lord Grenville which was slightly annoying but did sing Old Admiral another of my favourites.Saving year of the Cat until just before the encore over the top productions took centre stage on a rousing rendition of the one Al song everyone knows.Top piano from Erica and great sax from the sax player.
Two more songs and it was time to go home.Shame.A great evening had by all.Set list to follow.
This is not his set list from last night-as he pointed out he doesn’t like doing the same show every night-but most of the songs from this earlier show were included-ignore the play video!
