All that uneaten food!

I can understand why the characters in sitcoms don't eat the restaurant/diner food/meals they supposedly ordered for certain scenes, (scenes often have to be repeated), but when I see them just sitting there not putting even a little of it in their mouths, just fiddle with it with a utensil, I go nuts. lol Can't the meals be made to look at least half eaten, before they're shown? -- Hope it's all fake food. lol

Elsie -- that drives me crazy, too !!! LOL ! I hate it when everyone sits down to eat .... full plates of food and the food looks like it hasn't been touched when they're done. That would NEVER happen in my family !!! :p I've also noticed when people have a cup of coffee with a cover on it and they set it down , you can hear the hollow sound of an empty cup !

Yes, I hate it too. They come down for breakfast, touch a cup and take off. Maybe a squirt of coffee is real, most likely a bit of somebody's coca cola. It's all fake, except for the above.

And when the actors really DO eat the food, quite often the "meat" has to be made from vegetables to satisfy the vegetarian and/or vegan preferences and/or food idiosyncrasies of the stars. For instance, a "steak" might actually be made of mushrooms and a piece of broccoli could be formed of green-dyed mashed potatoes or mashed potatoes made out of riced cauliflower.

My niece used to be a "set dresser" in Hollywood and would quite often have to perform some magic like coming up with something that looked like a beef taco but wasn't a beef taco or a reasonable facsimile of a rum-and-Coke for someone who liked neither Coke nor rum.

Actors may have a fake plate of food in front
of them, with dry ice hidden to give the steam
effect.

I find myself so focused on watching to see if the characters are actually eating the food on their plates that I miss hearing their dialogue. LOL!

It may seem uncouth to directors, for actors to be actually chewing on a mouthful

also, a bit hard to have an expression

Now, of course, I'll be fixated on the next meal scene

The actors barely eat their food because it obviously distracts from and makes impossible their dialogue,
and their whole performance. Same with beverages. The food is real and perhaps the crew
eats the food later or it is thrown out. I was an acting student so I know this. I did a scene on stage in which we
had hamburgers, purchased from a fast food place. We didn't eat any of it. (It was supposed to be Chinese
but we could not find a restaurant.)
Bowl of fruit may be plastic. Notice they often do not pay
for their meals or drinks. Many takes are often done before it is finished and actors watch their weight.

Or........The cameras sweep over one, or 2, actors showing them putting a fork full of food in their mouths and chewing it, to whichever actor is speaking. This is repeated with each actor during the "meal", thus giving the audience the impression that all the actors look like they actually eat the food. LOL Spit bucket nearby. On T V or movie situations. Complicated? Nah. :)
