Almost cut the cord yesterday with Dish.....

This is going to be a long one....sorry, but I wanted to share my DISH experience.

We moved 4 years ago out of town (about 20 miles), which is rural, to say the least. The only choices for TV were Frontier, which has a horrible rating, and DISH, so we've had Dish for 4 years. Our "contract" renews every 2 years and we've been able to keep our bill about the same each time. You HAVE to call and "negotiate" or they'll jump the price up a lot.

Our contract ran out on July 2nd so when I got the email for July's billing it was $10 more. Not a huge amount but I called and wanted to know why they no longer gave me a $5 discount for using auto-pay and no longer a discount on the receiver.

The first guy I got, I could barely understand him and he eventually transferred me to a "specialist". He was a little hard to understand but better than the first guy. He said that they don't give "discounts" any more and my bill out be the additional $10 added for July and my August bill would then go up $40 more! WHAT?? No way! I told him to "send me the box" and I would pack up their equipment and send it to them (with my best wishes!). Of course, they don't want to lose you as a sucker...I mean "customer", so he said he could offer me a Flex plan (we have the 120 channel plan, which we watch 3 channels from) and it would reduce my August bill. OK, here's the figures: We're currently paying $72 for the 120 channels. That's the $10 off. My July bill went to $84, with no discounts. The August bill was going to be $112.

This guy was suggesting a Flex plan (50 channels) for $94! I'm not the brightest bulb on the tree, but even I could see that didn't make any sense. I got so disgusted, I told him I'd call back. He said, I'll make notes on your account so when you call back, you can get this price. Ya, right...don't hold your breath.

I was practically spittin' nails when I hung up and my husband was sitting next to me and said....cut the cord. Now....you gotta understand that the only reason we've been holding on to Dish is because he loves to watch NASCAR, which will not sell the rights to any other broadcasters other than FS1 and NBC. So, for him to tell me to cut the cord...that was a huge decision on his part.

I was all set to do it (have been wanting to do it for a long time), so I call Dish back. Here's the corker. I tell him we want to cancel our service and please send me the box. He asked why and I told him. I said there's NO WAY we're paying $112 or $94, especially for a Flex plan that gives me less stations (not that I actually watch any of them) for more money that what my July bill ($84) would be. He said a Flex plan would never cost $94 and he looked at my account and said there weren't any notes in it about offering a Flex plan. What it all boiled down to was....he got us on a Flex plan for August for $67 and adjusted our July bill to $67.

It's amazing what can happen when you get hold of the right person. I'm still not thrilled that we're locked in for another 2 years, but that's how it is for now. Our situation will be changing within the next 9 months (we're leaving AZ...YAY...can't wait!) and hopefully we won't have to have Dish.

Do you suspect the first two agents were in another country? That’s what happens here. Had to get transferred to a Loyalty Specialist. Our plan automatically went up at the end of two years. They send offers & call regularly but somehow never thought to warn us about the end of contract. I had marked the date on the calendar but should have done it for 45 days ahead.

We agreed that we could go for fewer packages. DH had liked AMC and watched the sports stations once in a blue moon. Got rid of a couple others that we never watch and added HBO and they lowered the price. Still not cheap but we’re happy with our plan.

Are you moving back east? As I recall, it was you that wanted to go back.
You remember correctly! I was shocked a few months ago when hubby asked if I was still interested in moving back to PA. I didn't even hesitate. At that time, there wasn't much for sale back there in the area we wanted to go to but now there's a much bigger selection. We're trying to get our ducks in a row and not getting the horse before the cart. Hubby has a knee replacement coming up so we figure it will take some time to heal and our goal is to seriously get our house sold next spring. Things here get snatched up within hours and I hope they stay that way. We're going to buy the house in PA virtually. We sold our previous house to a couple from Alabama and they never came to see it before they bought it. My, how things have changed. I'm looking forward to relocating.

My experiences with DISH and DIRECT TV were so horrible, I told my kids, if I pass away suddenly, please put the cause of death as DIRECT TV!
Won't explain them here because i don't want to relive it.

Look int STREAMING as soon as you can! You will be so thankful you did!

We have had a lot of problems with Direct TV also. It is impossible to understand the bill. The hubby called several times when the bill had gone up. They promised to adjust the bill and when the next bill came it was the same as the first one.
Hubby called and complained and then adjusted the bill himself.
Now we have a late fee. When will it ever end.
I'm all for cutting the cord on any service but the hubby would go into TV withdrawal.

That's exactly what they did with me! I was the first person in town to get streaming! It started the same day I got rid of Direct TV!
I just searched out anyone who knew how to hook it up for me. It opens a whole new world of movies, shows, news, etc!
All i pay for is a higher MG internet service. No other charges! The same every month! It's wonderful!

What streaming do you have and how do you get it?? Are you talking about Roku?

If it wasn't for having NASCAR for my husband, I would have cut the cord a long time ago. We've had Roku for years and I use it for Youtube videos and audio books.

Had another go-round with DISH today! Yesterday when I spoke with them, I had been talked into downgrading our service to their Flex plan. He told me it would go into effect Aug.1st. Nope. It's effective since last night. So, that means my husband doesn't have NBC Sports channel for the race this weekend! ARRRGGGHHH!

We had Dish TV for several years, and perhaps the best thing about that service was that it acted like a severe thunderstorm warning, as we would always lose service a few minutes before a storm hit. We still get junk mail from Dish...offering to supply us with TV service for quite a bit more than we currently pay. 3 or 4 years ago, our local electric co-op strung fiber optics cable throughout our area, and we switched soon thereafter. Fiber is the Best TV/phone/internet service we've ever had, and with the bundle the price is quite reasonable.

We don't have thunderstorms...let alone even rain...so we have clear skies at all times. Our co-op is currently putting in new fiber optics all around our county but it will be a loooonnnggg time before it gets to us. Hopefully, we'll be outta here within the next 9 months.

The second DISH tech is here to "downgrade" our receiver so we can, supposedly, save a few $$$ since I don't record anything. Oy vey :(

Dealing with customer service is getting worse and worse and worse as the years go by:
1. It takes forever to get a live voice after you push all those buttons.
2. You probably get some foreign voice that is hard or impossible to understand.
I'm so glad I cut the cable about 20 years ago. Between Amazon DVDs and Roku streaming channels, I have more shows that I ever need. As they say with cable, "500 channels and nothing to watch." Well, keep watching the jewelry channel and you will get dementia for free! No charge!

Roku recently did an upgrade. On their website is instructions on how to apply the upgrade. It includes lots of sports channels and 2 of those have NASCAR racing. (I'm not sure if it's live racing, but NBC is on there.) When I did the upgrade, I went from 117 channels to 500 (including about a dozen Spanish & Asian ones).

I also have a small, flat, $35 square antennae taped to a window that faces our broadcast TV towers. So for the one-time 35 bucks and my monthly internet charges, I get a whole lot of channels.

OK...here's the latest fiasco with DISH.

The tech came out this morning to "downgrade" our receiver so after he left, I went to our programming on DISH's web to add the sports package (another $12) that I had been told would be FS1 and NBC Sports Network included so my hubby could get NASCAR. Nope. That was a lie...or a half a lie because FS1 was in that package but not NBC Sports. After much searching around DISH's web to find out what was in each program package, the Flex package does not have NBC Sports and cannot be added.

Now, we're stuck with a package that doesn't meet what we want or we have to upgrade back to the 120 package like we had before and pay big bucks! I should have come here to ask questions before I committed to another 2 years with DISH. 😭

It reads like you never tried. Try anyway, you might be surprised. Towers are almost always on mountaintops.
OK...I just "tried" and according to their analysis, we could get 3-4 iffy reception channels. Nothing more. Thanks for the suggestion, though. This was the same results I got last year when we were considering an outside antennae.

Update the software or upgrade service??? I updated the software but didn't pay anything. Do I need to upgrade also??? I'm confused.
