Always look at your receipts

There's been a couple of times when I've ordered food in a restaurant and as a to go order and the person handling the ticket has added a tip unknowingly to me while checking out. The other day I was at Shoneys. The waitress was sitting down at the countertop eating breakfast. I slipped her a tip because I don't like leaving it on the table. I went to pay my tab and another waitress was checking me out. My bill was $23.00. She asked me if I had wanted to leave a tip. I told her I already had. She then took $5.00 off of my ticket she had added on for a tip. That's the second time that happened to me.

The first time was a to go order. I like to tip in cash so the person that brought my food to the car I gave a tip to. I was in a hurry and left. When I got home and looked at my receipt, someone had added a tip onto it already so the person that brought me my food got a double tip and knew it. I was furious about it. I was furious with the person that waited on me but even more furious at myself for not paying more attention. Hopefully I've learned my lesson and will pay closer attention in the future.

The only time I've seen where they would do an automatic tip was when you had a certain number of people in your party. It was up front on the menu & told what the percentage was (20% usually) & the number of guests where it would apply (lowest number was 6).

To do it without ever telling you isn't right. What if you had bad service & wanted to either adjust the amount or not leave one?

We always tip our waitresses good because they are working hard. Only once did we have a waitress who was terrible ... she was in a hurry for everything & didn't come back to ask if we needed anything or to refill drinks. We then noticed she was making time with some guy at the bar drinking. This was at a restaurant that we frequented quite a bit when it was open. She wasn't there the next time we went back.

Many, many years ago I had eaten lunch at the Amway Grand Plaza hotel in Grand Rapids, Michigan. When the bill came. I gave the waitress my credit card. She brought it back to me with the (then) carbon papered charge receipt. I was running late and I just wrote in an appropriate tip and signed the card but didn't write in a total assuming that she would do the simple addition and fill in the total amount.

I later discovered that she had added another digit in front of the tip amount and included that in the total, making it a generous tip indeed. :(
Valuable lesson learned. I now pay cash for restaurant meals and always check ALL receipts.

I haven't seen a Shoney's in many years.

In the big touristy areas of Orlando, many of the restaurants automatically add on a 18%-20% tip to the bill, because foreign guests often don't tip....because tipping isn't customary in their countries.

It's a win-win situation for the restaurants. They get the tips from the guests who normally wouldn't tip AND a lot of the American guests don't notice the automatic tip and then tip again. I almost did that once this summer. I have a feeling that the waiter wouldn't have chased me down and asked if I wanted to tip twice.....

I think I read somewhere that there were only 55 left in the US. I'm not that crazy over Shoneys but it was about the only sit down place in the town I was at that served breakfast.

Remember Stuckeys? On a vacation, I'd always beg to stop at a Stuckeys. Never happened; Mom always packed enough food for a battalion and we'd eat at a wayside.

To this day, I've never eaten at a Stuckeys. I think it's too late....<sigh>
