"Alzheimer & Dementia Friendly Dining"

We went to dinner at a restaurant last night that advertised that it had "Alzheimer & Dementia-friendly dining" Monday through Friday from 3-5 p.m. What a great idea!

Movie theaters have long had "autism-friendly" showings where the lights are kept low, not completely off and the sound isn't blaring. It's an opportunity to take children on the spectrum to a movie and not have to worry that they're "bothering" everybody. Nobody's behavior is going to stand out at a time like that.

But what a good concept "Alzheimer & Dementia-friendly dining" is. The restaurant will be uncrowded, so there can be separation from other tables. No music is playing. The waitstaff is extra-patient because they have the time to be extra patient. Nobody is going to be embarrassed or bothered by behavior. It would be such a blessing for an occasion like that to take your loved ones out for a family dinner.

Years ago, I had to stop taking one of my grandmothers to church because I just couldn't handle her. She would blurt out inappropriate and embarrassing things during the service in a voice that could be heard for two city blocks. I wish there could have been a dementia-friendly service. We just had to settle for watching a service on TV, which she was content with.
