Ancestry DNA history test

A niece in our family has done a great job of gathering family and ancestor information. At her urging I paid the fee and surrendered a DNA sample. Her urging came because I am the only one of six children still living. Frankly, I was not impressed with the feedback I got from the process. It really didn't tell me much that I hadn't guess about my roots. Maybe I didn't have the correct expectations, or factually I don't know what I expected. Thinking back I feel it was money wasted based on what I gleaned from it.
 

I was watching a show last night here in Sydney, called "Who Do You Think You Are"? and it was about a well-known actor. She was very interested to know where her acting came from. Her father is a well-known actor but she didn't know much about his side of the family. When the historians delved into her father's past, they told her there was no way her father was in the blood line of the rest of his family. It turned out his mother had an affair with the landlord which produced her father. She was shocked and as her father, who is still alive but has Alzheimer's
he would never know this history. I know about my past; I have a Family Tree which goes back to 1850 about ancestors from Scotland and Ireland, travelling to India with the Scottish Army and Irish cargo boat steam captain who decided to settle in India when the Railways were opening up. It is a fascinating read.

I'll never do one. I don't want to find any relatives.

I'm sorry you didn't get anything much out of the test.

Those genealogy shows can be interesting. My favorite is Finding Your Roots.
 

I did a Family Tree DNA test a few years ago. No huge surprises, mainly English, Welsh and Irish, plus Swiss + German. With the results being visible to other members it helped put me in contact with a 1st cousin I had been looking for, for a couple decades.
 
I did the 23 & Me test. I'm of French Canadian descent, so it wasn't a shock to find out most of my ancestors came from France-duh! But my ancestors got around from Southeast Asia to Mexico by 1515- 23 years after Columbus. Talk about claiming this land for Spain. I'm much more of a mutt than I expected. I'm not sure the $69 for the test was worth it, it wasn't hard guessing the French part ,but it was cool finding out my ancestor were very free spirited.
 
I'm not sure what I expected to find from this, whatever it was it just didn't give me any big info boom. I always knew I wasn't adopted or descended from royalty. My heritage isn't spectacular and I'm fine with that. As I have aged and seen quite a bit of the world I think I'm pretty fortunate to have been born in America and to have at least what I consider some of the better things in life. Most of all I'm most pleased with the legacy I will leave in four good children who are responsible citizens of the world raising good children as well. DNA didn't tell me that but it probably plays a part.
