Anchoring Wheelie Bins

Our 2 storey flats have no shelter from the wind and during some of the storms this year I have been kept busy chasing my bins down the street. There is nothing to tie them to as we have 2" of cladding on the outside which makes it difficult to fix anything substantial to the outside walls.

Today I woke up to a “eureka moment”.
If I fill one of the 5 litre bottles that I buy my vinegar in with water and attach to the bin with a bungee strap, job done, I hope!

Good idea Purwell…..👏👏👏

We have 3 bins . I pass a light weight plastic chain through the handles of all three and secure it with a small lock. JimB.

the bigger question is why do you buy Vinegar in 5 litre bottles ? do you own a chip shop ?:D

We sometimes buy vinegar for pickling in 5 ltr. bottles, but sometimes, it's cheaper to buy 5 1ltr ones. However, I understand the problem. It's quite windy here but I'm usually up and running before the bin lorry comes round, so I leave the wheelie bins (and food waste caddy) out just before they come to collect them. I'm a bit doubtful about anchoring the bin with a water bottle (or any other weight ) - surely it will depend on the wind direction.

There is also the issue that after the bungee is taken off and the bin emptied, I doubt if they would re attach it so the empty bin will blow away.

Are these the type of bins that are picked up by the men or by a machine?

You could use the weighted vinegar bottle while stored beside the house, remove it and anchor the wheels with a door wedge when at the curb. That’s not going to solve the problem of the bin flying off once it’s emptied.

We must have a lot more wind than you do, we can get 90 mph usually in the cold of winter. I got tired of chasing our garbage can, and trash, down and built this. What you don't see is the foundation, lots of dirt and gravel subsurface holding this down. The ropes were a later improvement when 3 sides proved in adequate. Took a bit of work, but no problems since.
