Another airline goes bust

It was announced that the UK airline, Eastern airways, is on the verge of bankruptcy. Although it was a relatively small company, it was the number one provider of transport for premier league football throughout Europe and provided a link to some remote parts of Scotland. Amongst its main destinations were Aberdeen and Manchester. The Scottish airline Loganair and various railway companies are working to get stranded passengers to their destinations.

I always found it easy to identify Eastern aircrew as their uniforms never seemed to fit properly.

I know very little about this airline other than it was a startup airline around 1997. COVID kind of played a part in their diminishing revenue and passenger traffic. Here in the U.S., our government is known for bailing out the larger airlines. To my knowledge, Southwest, Allegiant and other low cost airlines were never given any money.

It’s never a good thing for passengers when an airline goes under. It cuts the competition and forces the passengers to ride on the larger airlines that cost more for airfare and baggage charges.

Sir Freddie Laker was a pioneer who kick started low-cost air travel with his Skytrain service in 1977. His no-frills, low-cost approach to transatlantic flights between London and New York made air travel accessible to the general public for the first time. Although his airline eventually went bankrupt, his business model inspired many subsequent budget airlines.
