Another Phone Scam!

I had a call today, the caller was a computer speaking
in a female voice stated:

"This is Visa security just checking an unusual withdrawal
of £600 to Western Union, press 1 to cancel or confirm".

I hung up, then checked my bank account no movement
at all, so be careful, if you get this call, do nothing other
than hang up.

Update, this was sent to me earlier by a friend,
though I don't live in Yorkshire, the advice is
relevant everywhere.

Mike.

POLICE in North Yorkshire are warning residents about "press one" phone scams.

This is where fraudsters may call a person, out of the blue, then tell them something
like "there is a warrant for your arrest/your internet is going to be cut off/there is a
problem with your computer/you have a refund waiting/money is being withdrawn
from your bank."

The fraudster will then tell them to "press one."
At this point, they will be transferred to another person and there may be a large
connection fee for this, sometimes upwards of £5.
The call will then cost the recipient, and their aim is to keep that person talking for
as long as possible, as the call may be costing them upwards of £3.60 per minute.
Should they then abstract personal information about the call recipient, there are
further opportunities for them to defraud that person using a different method.

North Yorkshire Police said people should hang up the phone if they are told to
"press one" and then don't try to ring the caller back.

Whenever you say "Hello," & there is a pause before someone starts speaking, it's usually a sales or scam call. The 2-3 second pause is caused by the equipment the caller is using. They're not just dialing your number. Their equipment dials several numbers, then it takes a couple of seconds to detect which call was answered; that's why there is a pause.
When I say "Hello," & no one is there after 1 second, I hang up.

I've had one recently informing me that BT broadband in my area was to be ended that evening.I didn't get beyond that because I cut the call off but I can't believe anyone would have fallen for whatever it was they were asked to do!

I got a new to me scam call this evening.

The caller left a message saying that I needed to contact them immediately because someone just ordered a new iPhone using my Amazon account.

I was pretty sure that it was a scam but I checked my account online to see if my credit card had any recent activity and found nothing.

Then all I could think of was this old schoolyard line. “I Made You Look, You Dirty Crook, You Stole Your Mother’s Pocketbook...”

I have to remember they are BSing and scammers. I've gotten frightened by some of these calls. Telling me they are taking $250.00 out of my account for a subscription! After all they don't have my account number or even know who I am when they call. Something should be done about these calls--they should be outlawed! I wish my phone company would do something.

Has anyone heard about them (government or phone companies) doing anything about these calls to stop them?

Mostly bluster and blow from the regulating bodies that are supposed to protect us. Robocalls are not supposed to be happening, but I get 3-5/day, everyday.

As long as there is a way to make money off of gullible folks, our species will exploit it. What a great life form we are.......

I'm not getting as many since I blocked many of the numbers calling me and put myself on the Do Not Call List. I still get them weekly, though, pain in the rear they are!

When an unrecognizable # shows up, we let the answering machine pick up .. NEVER do they leave a message. The phone companies are supposedly not allowing robo-calls through, since the beginning of the year. We still get the odd one, though. Fewer through to my cellphone too.

My hubby use to get a scam call every other day. He has started blocking the numbers. This one company got him and I tried to warn him..but what do I know. Well, they called to tell him he owed $$$$ on a past bill. He had a lot of not so good financial things going on years ago.. but cleared as he thought, them all up. The company said he owed $$$ amount. I told him tell them send you a bill and you will pay it. He listen to their spill about sending him to court, yada, yada.. we talking about 8 or more years ago. Long story short.. he paid them..we talking over $1,000. He went to work and found an article online relating to collection agencies trying to collect on old debt. He realized it was a mistake to pay them. I did not give him too much flack about it..he already was feeling bad about it... lesson learned. Crazy thing about it..someone from the same company tried to do the same thing. He blocked the numbers. They finally stop calling.
