Antioxidants ?

SB mentioned in the flu shot thread that a person should take vitamin C, D3 (which I do) and antioxidants to boost their immune system.

I'll be the first to admit that I know absolutely diddly squat about antioxidant supplements.

Which antioxidant supplements should a person purchase and how much of each should be taken daily ?

My renal specialist and family doctor have me on Vitamin D, 2000 units a day. Vitamin C 500 mg a day and a multi vitamin each day. My Vitamin D level was very low. I suggest your family doctor test you and advise you. Better your doctor advise you as there are tons of supplements out there and you should not diagnose yourself.

You are going to get all kinds of conflicting answers to those questions. I had a problem with vaccines and with some antibiotics, so that affected how I looked all that. I researched info online and came across Andrew Saul's website, bought his book "Doctor Yourself", and went with his recommendation on high dosing with vitamins C, A, and niacin. I don't know how you tell for sure if it is effective. I've been doing it a few years now and haven't been particularly ill/sick since but that's only a few years (and I have never been one to get ill/sick on a regular basis). Now I take large doses of vitamin E, D, high quality fish oil, and a few other aliment specific supplements for my knee and prostate as well. It's a lot of pills to down but the only down side I have seen to this point is the nominal cost.

There are specifics to the type of vitamins you take for certain ones. I don't recall those details off hand, I just resupply with the same type every few months.

I've been using supplements for decades, but I'm not an expert and can just say what I use and what seems to be working for me and my husband. Neither of us are health freaks, we eat our share of what may be considered 'unhealthy' foods, and we don't exercise except for daily walks and occasional weight exercise. We also eat healthy foods, but you can't eat enough of them to get ideal health benefits and much of the produce these days aren't as nutritious due to poor depleted soils.

I'll mention some of the antioxidant supplements general dosages, nothing I do is set in stone, for example in summer months I may take a lower dose of D3 than in winter. But I'm not on any prescription drugs yet, and realize that using vitamins and supplements does not work miracles, there is diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. in my immediate family and all those folks relied on doctor's advice only, which is their preference, and I respect that. But, regular MDs are not really schooled in supplements, they learn to diagnose a condition and write a prescription.

Anyone with medical issues or on prescription drugs should always do their own research on any side effects or drug interactions when using vitamins or supplements, doctor's approval is a good idea if you're taking prescription drugs.

Below are a couple of links explaining antioxidant foods and supplements, and two of the antioxidant juices I've been using for the past few months, just an ounce a day of either. They are expensive, but can be bought at cheaper prices if you shop around, I don't take these all the time but wanted to get some extra antioxidant protection with winter approaching.

From your list SB, other than the Omega 3 and Lutein which I've been taking both daily for awhile, it looks like I've got a little shopping to do :)......oh, I brought the 'Omega 3' thread back to the top for those that may be interested.

Thank you for the reply SB.

Most people get the wrong kind of Vit C. If it only says ascorbic acid, it's a cheap, synthetic form, not so effective kind. It must say Rose hips, or Camu Camu, at least, for it to be the best kind of Vit C. Check your bottle. It's super hard to get enough C from just the foods you eat.
Most people, especially 50+, are indeed deficient in C, E, D3, K2, Magnesium, Potassium, just to mention the main ones. One must be careful in buying the wrong kinds of these.

Medical doctors don't get much training of proper nutrition in med school... they study mostly drugs. They maybe get at most, 3 hrs on proper nutrition. They are taught that 400 IU of vit D is the right amount. This is WAY off. It should be around 4000 IU. I used to get a bad cold that lasted for weeks, along with the sore throat and coughing after the cold, once and usually twice a year, especially in the winter. I don't any more. I read a book called something like Miraculous Results...D3, and did what he suggested, that did the trick. I did 20,000 IU for a few weeks to catch me up, now take 5000 a day. Had my D checked 3 weeks ago, and it was 57 ng/ml; which is very good.

Vit. C is up there in good nutrients, but Glutathione is the KING of antioxidants.

Most people could really benefit by getting more magnesium. And their Potassium levels compared to Sodium is probably WAY low. Most have a 1:12 ratio of Pot to Sod. It should be about 2.5 to 1. So that's 4700 mg of Potassium to 1500 mg of Sodium. Throw away your regular salt and get some Pink Himilayan salt or at least some sea salt. The Himilayan is Queen of sodiums. Both are way healthier than regular salt you pick off the shelf at the grocery store.

K2 does lots of good things for you. The good quality I get is called Super K with advanced K2 complex. Among other things, it helps regulate where the calcium goes in your body, putting it where it belongs and not in your arteries.

Getting good Omega 3 which someone mentioned is also a great thing. Just take 1 tbsp. of Cod Liver Oil a day will get your there. Our Grandparents knew what they were doing there.

There's a great page, called 'Cronometer dot com' that will track your vits and minerals, etc and tell you how many you have eaten and how much you lack. You can use the government stated rda or you can set your own for those (like Vit D3) that you know to be not enough.

If one takes the 6 I mentioned above in good quality doses, you'll be running around like a spring chicken in a few weeks. . . if you do the added thing. Didn't mean to hijack the thread, so will start a new thread on that 'one added thing'. Which has to do with cleaning your colon out...if your colon is clogged up, like John Wayne's was, your body won't absorb much of these vitamins and nutrients, and they'll pass right though your body without giving the benefits.
