Antique price guides are not very helpful

I've found that published price guides on antiques are pretty much useless. A person once told me that something is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. It can very widely between geographic regions and from year to year. They also become outdated very quickly. Opinions?

Very true.
estimates from auctioneers can often be better, if followed up fairly quickly; but in UK you can get charged 20% sellers premium and 15% buyers premium, that adds quite a lot!
