Any book lovers here?

I have loved reading my entire life. Lately though, I find myself re-reading old books I've enjoyed in years gone by. The newer books out there now seem to be dumbed down. Even long time favorite authors seem to be writing by rote and following the same formula book after book. It's as if their books are being written by AI or by ghost writers. Anyone else notice this "dumbing down" lately? Are there any current authors that you would recommend? I like mystery, thriller, adventure books, primarily. No chick-lit, please.

Does your public library offer a book club? I love mine, it meets approximately once a month, although the next meeting is five weeks after the last as we were "assigned" a six hundred pager "The Rose Code" by Kate Quinn. I have not started it yet, so I have nothing to report on it.

Yeah I do enjoy reading actual books. We have a bookcase full of our favourite authors. I take spells when I read continually then lay of books for a while. Favourite authors: Me (not the wife)....Ian Rankin, Alan Parks, Stewart McBride (all crime fiction) and Lee Childs - (Jack Reacher)

I don't particulary enjoy what's referred to as women's literature (although there was an occasional book by and about women that I did like). Most book club selections tend to fall into that category. I do like historical novels, though, and I think you will enjoy "The Rose Code". Kate Quinn usually writes good books (women's lit though but some of it can be enjoyable).

Just off the top of my head:
i.e. Is Gone Girl, et al, an example of Women's Lit?
I read "Gone Girl" years ago and enjoyed it immensely. I would not categorize it as Women's Lit though even though it was written by a woman. It was definitely in the thriller/mystery genre.

I like Lee Child but his last couple of books (the ones he co-wrote with his brother) were not up to his usual good and suspenseful writing. I also like Michael Connelly, James Rollins, Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child among others (too numerous to list). James Patterson is a hit and miss lately. Some of his books are excellent and some aren't. Same with John Grisham.

I hate Fiction particularly ''womens' literature''....but I've been a lifelong reader...

However now I find if I read a book in the day time I fall asleep so I keep my reading until bedtime, which means I don't get through books anywhere nearly as fast I used to. I stopped using the library several years ago... hardly any new books were every coming in, and the library had become a very noisy , unrelaxing place. Children running around.. half of the library given over to computers, noisy keyboard tapping en mass... I buy all my reading material now...
