Anyone Else Cranking Their Heat Up Higher Tonight?

It feels so darn cold in here. I've got on clothes with a big long sweater over them and still so cold. Wind chill is at 0 now.

I just turned my heat up higher--about 74 I think. It's a windy, cold ❄️🥶 night.

How are you doing with this coldness?

I know there will be someone who lives in 90 degree heat now. Haha... that's too hot for me😂

it has been cold here, took a long time for the house to heat up. we burn wood and it has been windy as well...adventures of an old farm house. Now it is bed time and its 74. the furnace is set at 66, so by morning it most likely will be 66. if it is not windy
it heats up fast.

I turn the heat down when going to bed but tonight I may not turn it down as low as usual.

I've been cranking up our outdoor wood furnace since mid November....It cuts our electric bill in half. We usually keep the thermostat set on 72, and the electric furnace only comes on for a bit in the early morning before I hurry outdoors to put some more wood in the furnace. I've already gone through at least 2 cords of wood, and I need to go out in the forest to cut down some of the hundreds of smaller live trees and pop some of that green wood in to make the fire last longer. According to AccuWeather, it may be mid to late March before we get out of this Winter weather.

Last year we didn't have real Spring weather till May! I'm in Ohio--not a good climate but a less expensive state to live in.

Best of luck with cutting all that wood. You must be pretty strong to be able to chop trees.

I live alone so there's no one to complain about the 50*F thermostat setting in the house.
I wear lined jeans, a sweatshirt, 2 sweaters and a cardigan.
I have a wood burning stove too so I don't use very much gas.

I live in a 900 sq ft 2-story quad unit 1970s condominium that has natural gas heating. The average San Jose December and January highs are both 60F and low 42F so not at all very cold. That noted, I do ski each winter and lodge a day or two most weeks at Tahoe at 6.3k where mid winter temperatures are well below freezing most nights. Being frugal turned off my residence gas about 2 decades ago so have been just using portable electric space heating downstairs while closing doors of my 2 upstairs bedrooms that become chillier. Most days I keep the temperature in the 60F to 67F range while bedrooms drop into upper 50Fs. My PG&E bill is relatively low. Of course at home I wear loose soft comfortable warmer clothing.

Now here is a nugget of wisdom for those wondering about a space heater few would consider. If I decide to use the upstairs bedroom I use an 1875 watt Revlon RVDR5172 model hair drier for a few minutes that is similar to the below current $14 model, to heat the air. It has 2 heat and fan levels and heats up the room far better than using any space heaters all of which are certain to cost more.

Hey, that's an idea. I've never thought of using my hair dryer. I have one and think it may be a Revlon.

My bedroom is always cold. Tonight I am wearing fleece pants, a cotton turtleneck and a fleece pullover designed to be worn outside. My bedclothes include a down comforter, a wool blanket, a fleece blanket, and a cotton quilt. I am not cold. We don't turn the heat up, leave it at 70 and with all the windows from 1954, the house is very leaky. I'd rather it leak cold air in than have it not letting any air in at all. Much preferred would be that I lived on a tropical island.

I'm enjoying it!

Usually, my apartment is like a tropical rainforest, but this cold snap is a refreshing change.

Thinking about those cold winter mornings when I was a kid. We used to turn on the oven and open the door to warm things up.

Nowadays, experts discourage such things.

There didn't seem to be any experts around when I was growing up. :giggle:

Crap, it is -24C here and it feels like -31C and I will be going out later this morning for an appt at Sunnybrook hospital. I have waited awhile for this appt so I am not cancelling it. There is an extreme cold warning out there but I will warm up the car before I go so it won't be too bad.
