Anyone have experience with liver problems from Tylenol?

Had my yearly visit with my Endocrinologist a days ago and got a surprise. Your liver readings were way off in your blood test! She's asked if I'd taken Tylenol. Well, I've been on Hydrocodone for many years for a back injury. But I didn't take much, maybe half the suggested dose. But a couple of months ago I had caught a bad bug that making the rounds and was so sick that I took OTC meds which included Acetaminophen. So, did I do my liver in?

The doc took me off Metformin and Simvastatin. Of course my sugar control went out of whack; but that is doing better now. I'm not worried about my cholesterol going haywire because I've gone vegetarian since I was put on the statin. But I am worried about my liver. I get another blood test July 1st and I want to do whatever I can to make sure it is okay. So far I've started taking Milk Thistle and eating some Good and Plenty's (one of the few things that still contain real licorice). Has anyone else had this problem with a good outcome? Any good suggestions for me?

I haven't had any problems, but then I am extremely careful with my pain meds, and try to avoid those containing acetaminophen. Did your doctor show you your test results, or did he/she just tell you that your readings were off?

I ask because there is an acceptable range, between low and high, that would help you gauge how much your function has changed. I suggest you not change your diet from what you were eating when you started seeing your liver function go haywire. Your blood test must reflect your biochemical condition as it might be on a regular day. Changing your diet changes your circulating levels liver enzymes, rendering your test result inaccurate. IF you were not using Milk Thistle and licorice when you had your last blood test, do not start using it before your next test.

Thanx for your input. No, she didn't show me the results; she just said "Your liver readings were WAY off." My diet had to change some, as now my blood sugar reacts dramatically, easily going over 300. So I'm doing a reduction of carbs to control it.

I have no idea when my liver function went haywire, as I have not seen that doctor for a year.

My evening Glipizide to adjusted back to a previous evening dose of 15 and my "R" insulin was raised two units for each of the three doses. My "N" insulin dose remains the same. The Milk Thistle is an herb for cleansing of the liver, as is the licorice. Since I'd eaten the licorice occasionally (as I am now) I won't change that.

I did quit drinking diet sodas a few months ago, and now only drink water. I was very sick for three weeks in April & May, and at that time took OTC flu remedies, in addition to the usual Hydrocodone that I take for a bad back. I figure that is probably when the problem began.

Tylenol and Motrin have been known to have a bad effect on the liver. Milk Thistle is the top supplement recommended for many liver conditions, and general healthy liver support. The liquid tincture if preferred over the capsule form. Nature's Plus is a good brand that is a standardized liquid of 125 mg. and 80% Silymarin. I have some at home right now, although I don't take it daily. Here's more info on Milk thistle...http://www.natmedtalk.com/wiki/Milk_Thistle

Diet soda, IMO, is worse than regular soda. The artificial sweeteners are just like poison to the system. I like to drink plain seltzer water, no sugar, sweeteners, caffeine, sodium, etc. You can add a touch of unsweetened lemon, cranberry, cherry juice, etc. for a change of taste...more interesting than plain water for sure.
