Anyone maintaining a MeetUp Group?

I'm considering setting up a meetup site for Chicago Suburban folk that enjoy live community theatre. There are a few such groups but for the North and Central Chicago area. There is a clear need to fill a gap for the western suburbs.

I am relatively technically literate to the point of building my own websites. But am not familiar with software packages such as Meetup. I would appreciate any feedback, advice, lessons learned, blog/vblog capabilities within the Meetup Application.

I'm a member of a meet up group. I would guess all that technical stuff probably takes care of itself and as a web builder it would be relatively easy. Perhaps joining those other 2 groups would give you some ideas on how to run the group because that after all is going to determine it's longevity.

The group I belong to is invitation only and then after that one must show up to a bar to socialize before they will allow you into the activity the group is focused on.

I joined one with a couple of friends several years ago. We may have been unlucky but, our emails got choked up with spam! I know people who have joined meet-up groups with no problems though so, maybe open an email account just for your meet-up contacts.

I joined one or two a year ago but never went to any "events." I guess I'm just way too busy!
