Anyone remember Howard Johnson's

Yeah, I remember seeing those. "That's where rich people go" said Ma. When we got to our Aunt and Uncles' we'd get a peanut butter sandwich or a hot dog and an apple.

Stuckey's same deal.

Howard Johnson;s got started in my neck of the woods. There was one in my home town and friends and bf of the time used to go there with me a lot. Friends from school worked there. It was a clean place with decent food at reasonable prices. Dad loved Hojos and stopped to buy us a clam roll every time we drove up to grandma and grandpa's home which was out of state. There were tons of Hojos up there. It was a very popular chain in New England. I liked them. It's a super happy memory.

One of my first jobs was at a Howard Johnson's, either in Fresno, Calif, or Merced...I can't remember. I ran endless racks of dishes through the dishwasher, "shocked" droopy salad greens back to life, carried out the garbage, mopped floors, and did various menial tasks for the cooks when I was the "cook's assistant," usually on the Sunday morning shift.

I also dated a couple waitresses, but Howard didn't pay me for those hours. Not in my job description, that was more of a perk. 😜

You had Hojos in CA Frank??

Never stayed in one
Never ate at one

Seems most the HoJos I've ever seen had a solid brick wall on one end

I was the brick layer's helper on the 'new' one in Houston, back in the 60s

Carrying hod and brick up too many tiers of scaffold
The money was good @$4/hr

my oldest brother was a regional head hunter for H.J. one
time....he would go in undercover to check on how things
were run and fire some if needed.

I used to love stopping at HoJos with my folks in the '50s. Howard Johnson's evidently had won the concession contract for the Pennsylvania Turnpike. So when we drove from Pittsburgh to Connecticut, we'd stop frequently. My favorite? The fruit cups in the dessert goblet with ice cream.

Later on I didn't frequent them much. I didn't know the chain still existed.
