I couldn't help but thinking that, if he did so well and was so brilliantly beneficial to society while he was not drinking — so much so that three(?) governors pardoned him — it's too bad he didn't just stop drinking altogether.

Or, I also wonder, since people generally don't just disappear, if he either drank himself to death or stopped drinking and faded back into the woodwork somewhere.
