Are incontinence issues covered by some type of medical home care coverage?

Know an immobile senior who should be in a nursing home has trouble with incontinence and cannot even make to their home bathroom in time. Someone needs to come in a empty their porta potty and maybe clean up a mess at least every other day.

They absolutely refuse to be admitted to a nursing home. Is incontinence enough of a medical issue for medical insurance/home care coverage?

Because i worked in the aged and disability industry I was fully aware of this incontinence assistance scheme for people living in their own homes

State and Territory schemes | Continence Foundation of Australia

Of course I live in Australia so it may be a different story in your country however you will never know , unless you ask if there is any such services for the person you mentioned to seek assistance / advice / on their behalf if they are unable to do so themselves

The Aussie site has an assistance / speak to a nurse option …so you may well have simular schemes .??

I’ve been retired over 12 years however when I was fully aware of what was on offer back then and some of my clients received funding to buy special underwear / overnight pads / adult nappies/ commodes/waterproof mattress covers

Prior to that many were to afraid to go out incase they “embarrassed themselves” as they put it …..
and most gained so much confidence after being advised / provided with funding to purchase needs , they started going out to social outings for the first time in years.

So as a first step ask a Doctor and or if you have a 6 monthly check up as we do with the community nurse at the doctors I’m sure he / she will assist you if your country has such a assistance scheme.

We also have a goverment scheme called My Aged Care who can assist / advise ( Australians)

Usually Medicare won't cover incontinence supplies unless you are on hospice care. Medicaid might cover supplies if a doctor supplies documentation that it is "medically necessary". If this person wants a home aide, I believe Medicare will cover it if the person is getting skilled nursing at the time. Otherwise, I think you have to go the private care route.

To find out what medicare might cover for home care visits, the person needs to have an individual evaluation.
I don't remember if that process is initiated by the Dr office, or by the local Area Agency on Aging.

Call either one of them, to find out how to get the evaluation scheduled. And to ask other questions, that have answers that depend on the specific situation.

Incontinence is something I see all the time since I have been working in nursing homes since 1996. A lot of the times, an elderly person isn't even aware that they wet themselves. But we the staff, will notice the yellowish puddle under their wheelchairs.
