Comic books fulfilled an essential need for me. I was born in 1950, in the days before they knew about things like dyslexia, etc. I had some difficulties learning to read among other things. In those days, academic resources were very primitive. I had a bratty tutor at the school who I believe may have also been my parent's choice for a babysitter at times. The school really didn't help me with my reading needs.

One day my brothers and I discovered comic books. We devoured everything we could get. Our favorites were "superhero" comics. At the time, DC comics dominated (Superman, Batman, etc.). My reading comprehension and vocabulary skills skyrocketed. By the time I reached 4th grade, I was already reading books in High School level. Jules Verne and others were my treasured friends early on.

I devoured comics over the decades. In the early 1960s, Marvel comics came into being, with their flawed superheroes (Daredevil, Fantastic Four, etc.) I've preferred Marvel over the years, but also loved DC (Superman, etc.) Back around 1980, I made a choice between my comic book habit and the potential of buying a new computer. I lost sight of comics for decades. But I came back awhile ago.

In some ways, I love consuming comics on my iPad. I can sit on the easy chair, and read easily. But sometimes I like to buy "anthology" collections on Amazon. Oh, and I collect most, if not all, of the SuperHero movies.
