A few years ago I ran into a retired military man who was the administrator for a chapter of Honor Flight in our state. I have since learned that there are such organizations in many if not all the states. At first this organization's mission was to assist WWll veterans for an all expense paid trip to DC and a tour of the memorials their paid for my contribution. With the population of WWll veterans rapidly declining the opportunity to sigh of for one of these tours has been expanded to include veterans of service in Korea and Vietnam.
Three years ago I was invited to make the tour as a Vietnam veteran, and last year I made that same trip as a guardian. A guardian is a vetted inividual, who pays for his travel, accompanies an invited veteran who needs assistance such as with a wheel chair. Both of the tours have been very rewarding for me. The experience has helped my deal with some issues that had been with me for the better part of fifty years. I will welcome the chance to make the journey as a guardian once again if the opportunity comes my way.
