Are You Comfortable Swimming in Public Pools and Soaking in Hotel Hot Tubs?

The thread about public restrooms got me thinking about other public facilities that might be contaminated enough to cause concern. Then I saw this news item today:

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/how-much-urine-is-in-a-swimming-pool-canadian-study-has-the-answer/

"Health hazards in pools are a significant concern for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Each year, thousands of public pools, hot tubs, and water playgrounds across the country are forced to close due to serious health and safety violations, including improper pH levels (critical for killing germs), according to the CDC."

Public restrooms don't bother me but public pools of any kind where the whole body is immersed gross me out. I'd rather take my chances swimming in a river or pond. How about you?

No, I don't swim in public pools or use public hot tubs anymore. I'll take a swim in the salt water ocean if I can, but that's not readily available by me. Even lakes these days are not ideal with the flesh/brain eating amoebas. :xbone: An old thread I started about these public recreation areas, warning, video is unsettling. :playful: https://www.seniorforums.com/showth...c-Swimming-Pools-and-Hot-Tubs-I-Won-t-Anymore!

The hubby and I use to enjoy going to the casino's in Atlantic City a few years back when they offered free rooms, buffet and some slot play. Part of the fun was the use of the pools they all had. I often thought about just how clean they were but put it in the back of my mind. The hot tubs were also inviting because of my bad knees. I generally just sat on the step with my legs and knees in the water. They were to hot for me to completely submerge anyway and those tubs I was especially leery about. Kept thinking of all that dead skin floating around. One thing we made sure of, is that we took a long shower back in the hotel room when we were finished at the pool. Needless to say Atlantic City seems to be a thing of the past, but it was fun while it lasted.

Back in 2000,we went on vacation to a resort in Bend,Oregon. The place was loaded with college students-most were working there but were allowed to use all the amenities when their shifts were done. There were pools and hot tubs that we used. The week after returning home,I came down with a sore throat the likes of which I had never felt before. Even after my tonsillectomy. Went to the doctor, she kind of "blew me off",but there was something going on in the office that day that had her attention ( domestic violence victim I think). Anyway, she prescribed Amoxycillin. A week went by and I wasn`t the least bit better,in fact felt worse,so saw the doctor where I live (other doc was near my work-3 hours from home). This doc said it was a sinus infection and gave me a Z-Pac. That was on a Friday. By Sunday,I was very, very sick and by Monday night my daughters got scared and took me to the hospital. Spinal puncture showed it was bacterial meningitis. Spent a week in the hospital. Doctors felt it probably came from the pool or hot tub on vacation-especially because there were a lot of college students using them.

Now all of that being said,I also contracted bacterial meningitis last April and wasn`t anywhere near a pool or hot tub for many months beforehand sooooo........Long story short ;) I`m OK with pools but I don`t like sharing hot tubs with anyone but hubby and only our own.

Oops! I did a search on swimming pools and that thread didn't show up! Sorry about repeating what you did a fine job on the first time but I hope some new input will be appreciated. :)

I think I've been in a public pool twice in the past 30 years. I did enjoy our private home pool when we lived in Florida, and if/when I move to Arizona I hope to have another one. But I am not a fan of public pools. I have never been in a "hot tub", public or private, and don't intend to.

Absolutely not for the hot tubs. Perfect breeding grounds for bacteria. I suppose swimming pools are too but with all the chlorine, I don't know. The last time I was in a pool was about 4 years ago at the local Y on senior day. I'm not crazy about public pools but I thought I'd at least learn how to float. Due to the rigamarole I had to go through to use the pool, I never bothered again. Never used a public hot tub, but have used the pool and jacuzzi at my BFF's house decades ago.

Ruth, we own a timeshare in A.C. and there are plans to revitalize the city in progress. New boardwalk (cement this time) that will people to walk all the way to Margate. Shaq O'Neill is supposed to be putting a theater across from where the Showboat casino, now a hotel, used to be. There are also plans for a water park. I think they want to make it into a family friendly town since the casinos are doing so badly. Of course they are still luring people with comps, freebies for time share tours and slot credit for those who take the buses in. Most of what you see in the casinos are seniors.

No way. The water in pools usually is very old and only filtered and chlorinated. People pee in pools, and worse, and that apart their 'bits' are being washed in the pool water all the time. I don't want to be saturated in dilute pee or risk swallowing what is in effect the bath water that has been used by countless people.

As for hot tubs - absolutely no way. Some people copulate in the things in addition to what takes place in swimming pools.
