Jack the Ripper, Jeffery Darhmer, Boston Strangler and yes my favorite Norman Bates. We watch movies like Halloween depicting Michael Myers’s as a young who murders his elder sister and returns 15 yrs later to murder more teenagers.
What was attractive about Jefferey Darhmer aka the Milwaukee Cannibal, serial killer and sex offender whose life story was publicized in a Netflix documentary.

it seems that humans have a desire to be close to death and morbidity without the reality of these things directly happening to them. We like to be scared, to feel the blood rush through veins in a fight or flight scenario pictured on the movie or tv screen. This thirst for gore and mayhem makes me wonder about our ranking on the intelligence scale is humanity ready to explore the universe and the possibility of encountering unknown species? According to US history should an intergalactic encounter occur in space or otherwise shoot first and ask questions later. Humans are overly concerned about themselves to co-exist with other species who might be more advanced than we are. First on the agenda overcome dominant species and rule the space accordingly.

Where does the dark side within us begin? Did it come from unresolved trauma? Does everyone have a dark side that needs come out or is repressed and stifled from being one’s true self, bottled up and contained so no one knows the beast that lives within you.
 

I have to admit that since I was a teen, I have read many,many books about serial killers. I wouldn’t say that I‘m attracted to them or that I have a dark side.
I am repulsed by them and I can’t understand how someone could do the things that they do.
I want to understand what makes them that way. Were they traumatized in their life? Are they mentally ill? Do they have a brain abnormality? Is there a common thread between them that would make them behave that way?
 
Human beings are complicated. We all seem to be intrigued by other people's lives and the things they do. Other species of animals have certain traits which are common to all, but humans vary so much; there seems to be few attributes we all share. There are also racial and national characteristics, which add to the mix.
We seem to enjoy being scared and horrified, so long as we only read about it, safe in our own homes.

Everything you said above Marian.. is me. Years ago I was fascinated by serial killers and their crimes, so I read loads of books about them, and like you repulsed at it all.. certainly not attracted to them or their crimes, just trying to understand what made those people tick...

No me.. I hate that. I never watch murderous, . gory or Horror movies.. ever...
 
At about 16 I watched movies like 'Halloween', 'Friday the 13th' and 'Friday the 13th, part 2' (both of them in a double feature after midnight) in our cinema. Then Piranha also. But that's not the reality. One of my cousins has piranhas in his aquarium, I watched them and they are very shy. He is a very calm man and obviously needs a little excitement.
Of course I like 'Psycho' since it is a masterpiece. There are so many psychological hints in it. Even Janet Leigh's bra changes in color, at first it is white, after she had stolen the money and arrives at Bates Motel it is black. It indicates that she had lost her innocence. Then the mother-son-relation between Bates and his mother, although she is already mummified.
Never watched 'splatter movies' as 'The Texas Chainsaw Massacre' or similar films.
Documentaries on serial killers? Some about Jack the Ripper, one on Jürgen Bartsch, a German killer who sexually abused four boys and killed them. But by looking at his early life in the Wikipedia article you'll notice that he was severely mistreated too.
A woman married him in prison. His death during the castration surgery due to an overdose of halothane was not a mistake as stated in the article. In fact the same doctor used it one week earlier while performing surgery on a mother. She died. In my opinion, this was the 'rehearsal'. He was never accused, since the police classified both deaths as an accident.

No. Much ordinary people are fascinated by, since passing through young adult years, have learned not to pollute my mind with. Movies like slasher films are abysmal that reflects what Roman citizens became addicted to in ancient days. Don't feed one's brain garbage or filth as it becomes embedded due to neural plasticity. A reason I don't open much click bait news headlines and ads one sees on web pages. Especially anything that has anything to do with a long list of evils and gutter morals. Also ignore much political news. On the other hand to enjoy intelligent science fiction like Alien or Predator with all its scary and human carnage effects.
