Are You Starting to Mark Things Around Your House for Memory or Safety Reasons?

I don't remember my mother doing this, my mother in law used to mark all the off buttons on her stove with red nail polish, so she or her husband wouldn't accidentally forget to shut the stove off. The marking made it easier to see, even if they weren't wearing their glasses.

Well, I only use 1.75 power over-the-counter readers, but a little while ago, I wanted to open a bottle of aspirin in a hurry. It was a small clear bottle with a white cap. In order to get it open, you had to line up the arrow on the cap with the arrow on the clear bottle. Well, I lost patience quickly trying to even see that clear arrow, and grabbed my readers.

After that, I went and got a black Sharpie marker and filled in the clear arrow with black, so it's easier to find. I started to think this might be the beginning for me to start marking stuff around the house when needed in my old age, just like my mother-in-law used to do.

Do you make special marks on anything in your house for convenience or safety reasons?

I have a sticker on my hazard button light in the car, it's a bright shiny cheetah print. Before the button just blended into the dashboard. When I get nervous in heavy traffic I use it quite often to encourage people to get out of the way.

I have labelled the all fuses in my fuse box with their corresponding outlet locations. This works well if something blows and I have to figure out which outlet it goes to.

When storing food items in clear glass jars, to see what it is inside, I cut out the label off a package of a food item like rye flour and place in with it.

Good ideas Cookie! Our fuses were marked when we bought the house a long time ago, but we keep up with making sure they're legible.

We replaced all of our old extension cords with newer surge protectors. We recently had a fire in our building and a sparking cord was the cause.

I make lots of lists and leave myself sticky notes. Might leave a sticky on the front door that says - take out bin.

I have packing lists, lock-up-the-house list (for going on long trips), I have a label on my liquids bag and my in-seat-pocket ziploc bag.

Years ago, I had an upright freezer in my garage plugged into a on, off switch and one outlet. Somehow, my son had used the outlet and hit the off switch for the freezer. Some thing later, I noticed a puddle around the freezer. Yep, it was completely thawed and ruined. Lost a ton of food.

Soon after that, I installed a little 50 cent plastic guard thingy so the switch couldn't be shut off. A very expensive lesson.
