Asking for the senior discount

I never ask for a senior discount. My father who was a decorated Vietnam vet never asked for a military discount.

Seniors or military may well deserve special considerations in some situations, for sure.
But one must be very careful not to cross the line that will lead to "entitled".
I don't feel entitled, just grateful.

This reply is nothing against anything you wrote - it's just a question. Are these teachers, whether or not they get a discount, buying school supplies for children who can't afford them? I'm just curious why they are buying the supplies.
I know some teachers who do buy supplies for poor children, but I think the balk of it are things the teachers use or things they buy for the whole class -- colored pencils, poster board, rulers, -- lots of items not covered under the basics that kids are expected to bring themselves.

So many places stopped doing it I got tired of the offhanded, "No, we don't have that" answer.
It seems to be about over around here, too. I think it might have been a bigger thing immediately after 9-11, when there were a lot of flag decals and "we support our troops," signs in every window.

We were new in this town at that time, looking for a family doctor, so I went into one doctor's office that had that sign in the window and was told they didn't accept people with military health insurance because it required too much paper work. So much for supporting the troops.

I guess that's what my husband should expect after 22 years of full time, active duty, service, 20 years of free honor guard service playing trumpet at all the military funerals in all kinds of weather, and 20 years of volunteer service four days a week at the local food pantry.

He ends up with people calling him entitled because he takes that 10% discount on Veterans Day.

Beyond discounts actually asked for, one of the greatest senior discount I'll ever get is the $10 I spent for the lifetime National Parks pass card. Of course, that has since been way jacked up. Also here in the San Francisco Bay Area, I have a Senior Clipper card, that allows me to very cheaply ride public transportation throughout the region.
